Apple Preorders Start Tomorrow: So Who’s Getting Up at Midnight PST?

Most of the sane people you know who are Apple users and are interested in upgrading their phones or watches will just head to or use the Apple Store app when they have a chance over the weekend and get squared away. No big deal. It’s just a phone or watch, right? Yeah. For better or worse, that’s not me.

Other than two situations when I was not eligible to upgrade with AT&T when a new iPhone came out, I have been on the web or the Apple Store app at the crack of 2 AM Central, refreshing like crazy until I can get in and preorder my preferred device. I’m one of the crazy ones, and I have no problem admitting that.

This year will be a little different, as I will be one of presumably millions to pass on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus to get the iPhone X. However, I will still be up at an un-natural hour Friday because I don’t want to chance having to wait weeks to over a month to get the new Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE. I know there will be far less demand for it than the coming iPhone X, but there may be enough to overwhelm Apple’s initial stock. When it comes to preorders, I’m conditioned. I don’t take chances. I get up early and get it done.

I KNOW I’m not alone. I know there are others like me out there. MANY others. I have jostled with you trying to get in the queue faster and get my preferred device ordered before you can swipe it from me. I’ve won some and lost some to you. I know you people- my people– are going to be up at the same time as me tomorrow morning. Most of you, anyway. There won’t be as many tomorrow as there will be in late October, but I wont be alone.

So who else will be joining me in the digital line at 12 AM Pacific? Who is getting what? I am very interested to know how many of you will be getting an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? I heard from some of you when I discussed potentially having to downsize and lose screen real estate over the current Plus a week ago (based on what turned out to be a false rumor reporting that the “usable” screen of the X would be smaller). There were several people in the Comments and in Flipboard who were going with the 8 rather than the X for a few different reasons. For those of you who are getting the 8 or 8 Plus, I would love to hear why.

How about the new Apple Watch Series 3? Who is excited about LTE? I know I am. Count me among those who already love the Watch without it. I just think the experience will be that much better with it if the battery life is reasonable. So who among you is picking up a Series 3 LTE, or a Series 3 without Cellular? What is drawing you to your chosen model? Also, are there any new buyers considering the Series 1 at its new lower price? I can vouch for the fact that it is a really fast and polished device if cellular and GPS don’t interest you.

I would love to hear from anyone getting an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, or the new Apple Watch or Apple TV. However, if you are an early riser like me, let me know what gets you out of bed at an un-Godly hour to get the latest Apple gear. You can reach me in the Comments section below, on Flipboard, on our Facebook page, or on Twitter @iPadInsightBlog. See you dark and early in the line at midnight sharp.

  1. I am going to wait at least a month and see what the early user experiences are. Further, I want my carrier to figure out how it is going to handle and charge for the Series 3 with Cellular before considering getting that model.
