Is Apple’s AirPower finally about to show up? There have been rumors on two or three occasions, but this time they may actually be real. Now the reports say that the AirPower has finally entered production. We all know that the supply chain is where the best Apple leaks come from, so game on.
Here’s the thing. At this point, who really cares? How many people, even among the true Apple faithful, are going to buy this thing? I have a HomePod, which I actually like, and an Apple TV, which I really don’t care that much about anymore. I’m about as “faithful” as you get, but I’m not even considering this thing. Even if I cared about wireless charging, which I don’t, there is no way that I am going to pay what I expect Apple is going to charge for the AirPower.
All that said, I have one reason to care about this news. It means that, after similar rumors and reports, the new version of Apple’s AirPods are likely to appear with the AirPower. Evidently, they are inexorably linked. One of the two centerpiece features of the new AirPods is rumored to be a wireless charging case, with the other being “Hey Siri” voice trigger recognition. Since the wireless charging is tied to the AirPower, at least in Apple’s eyes, the new AirPods have been held back for a while now.
Why do I care? Because I lost my AirPods while staying at a hotel last August. I have missed them since I lost them, but I am really struggling with it right now. I could really use a great set of Bluetooth buds at work at the moment, as I spend all day at work either carrying controls and equipment around my current job site, or fielding calls while using a laptop. Either way, my iPhone is so much easier to use at work with a pair of AirPods.
I have considered biting the bullet and going ahead and upgrading more than once. I still have my AirPods charging case, so I also considered just buying the buds (which turned out to not be a good value). However, I just can’t stomach knowing the new version is coming and parting with my money just before. Considering that the new AirPods were rumored to come last Spring and then again after WWDC and leading up to the iPhone and iPad launches, they have always seemed just around the corner. Maybe this time is finally the right time.
So come on Apple. Give us the AirPower a year late and more than a few dollars too high. The sooner we get it, the sooner all of us holdouts can get our new and slightly improved AirPods.
