Not so Uncool After All- iPhone is Incredibly Popular Among Teens

A few years ago, when Samsung started their big advertising push in support of the Galaxy S line of phones, one of the focuses of those commercials was that the iPhone was old and passé. The Galaxy S was billed as the “Next Big Thing,” while the iPhone was set up as the phone for your parents. We all know what that means by association- the iPhone isn’t cool anymore.

This PR move was a huge hit, and it definitely had a big impact at the time. It seemed like Samsung was cementing themselves as the more desirable brand among younger users. However, momentum and popularity among brands continuously ebbs and flows and while Samsung’s ad campaign had an effect, it certainly didn’t rob Apple’s iPhone of all its popularity among younger users.

In fact, according to a semiannual survey on teens from Piper Jaffray, it turns out that the iPhone is incredibly popular among this group at the moment. 78% of the teenagers surveyed own an iPhone, and 82% said that their next smartphone will be an iPhone. These are overwhelmingly high numbers. I can honestly say that I’m surprised they are this high.

While it has a far lower level of interest, the Apple Watch also registered gains in interest among teens, with 17% now planning to buy one in the next six months. This is up from 13% in the Spring of this year. While it is a small increase, it is in the right direction.

This survey covered 6,100 teens across 44 states with an average age of 15.9 years old, so it is quite comprehensive. It certainly bodes well for Apple that so many younger users here in the US have such a high degree of loyalty to their products. If they can keep this connection alive as these teenagers age, then device sales should be headed even higher.
