Rumored iPad Pro CAD Rendering Raises More Questions Than Answers

A couple of days ago, I wrote about a few new iPad Pro rumors, including a report about changes to Face ID and the Smart Connector that I wasn’t a big fan of. I felt that I had good reason to doubt the validity of Macotakara’s information. However, today brings more news that seemingly supports these and another strange rumor about the new iPads.

Noted leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, better known as @OnLeaks, released a supposed CAD rendering of one of the new iPad Pros today on Twitter. He was completely clear that he couldn’t verify the validity of this image, and that he was sharing it “for discussion purposes only.” However, the fact that the image seems to support Macotakara’s claims about Apple moving the Smart Connector can’t be avoided.

What we can’t know right now is which one of these items is the chicken, and which is the egg. It is quite possible that this rendering is a fake, and that it was part of Macotakara’s source material for their report. Of course, even though I remain very skeptical, I also have to admit that both reports could be legitimate. I just really hope that isn’t the case.

One detail that I think casts doubt on the validity of this image is the device’s flat back. We have never seen an iPad with a completely flat backside. The curvature of the sides and back and the thickness of the various iPad models has changed over the years, but we have never seen anything as flat and squared as the iPhones 4, 4S, 5, 5S, and SE. Considering that Apple has been on a quest to slim the device down over time, suddenly squaring off the edges and making the back flat seems quite out of character.

Of course, I could be wrong. Jeremy Horowitz of VentureBeat takes the depicted flat back in a completely different direction, going as far as suggesting that this indicates a new glass back is coming to the iPad Pro. Think about that for a second….an 11″ or 12.9″ glass back. Why? For wireless charging on a huge tablet that already takes a while to charge? Let’s just say I’m not convinced by the image or the author.

I’ve been begging for some iPad Pro rumors for a while now, but what we’ve gotten go far is definitely NOT what I had in mind. Hopefully these reports turn out to be either fabrications or concepts that Apple abandoned, and we can move onto some more realistic looking and sounding renders and rumors soon.
