The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR Are Official

The new iPhones are here, and are exactly what we’ve heard from the leaks, so far, but the A12 sounds quite impressive.

  • Most durable glass “ever in a Smartphone.”
  • Space Gray, Silver, and Gold
  • IP68 water resistance.
  • Super Retina OLED Display. 5.8″, like the iPhone X.
  • The iPhone XS Max is 6.5″
    • The Max is to differentiate it, because the screen is bigger than a Plus.

  • Face ID should be faster in its 2nd Gen
  • The new A12 Bionic Chip
    • The industry’s first 7 nanometer chip.
    • 6.9 billion transducers.
    • 6 Core CPU. 2 High Performance, and 4 High Efficiency.
    • An Apple-designed GPU. 50% faster than the A11.
    • Neural Engine
      • 8 Core dedicated machine learning engine.
      • Dynamically moves tasks between processors.
    • A12 can process 5 trillion operations per second. Damn.

  • CoreML is getting a lot faster, and will also use less energy.
  • A12 Bionic will power better AR performance, on device.

  • New iPhone XS Camera Features

  • 12 MP Wide and Telephoto Lenses.
  • 1.8 Aperture on the Wide
  • 2.4 Aperture on the Tele
  • New sensor on the Front Facing Camera, as well
  • A big focus on the A12’s Image Signal Processor’s role.
  • The Neural Engine will do real-time analysis on pictures.
  • 1 Trillion operations on each photo taken.
  • Smart HDR
  • Portrait Mode should improve with the extra processing power
    • New Bokeh improvements in Portrait Mode.
    • Phil is REALLY excited about this- New depth slider in Edit mode for Portrait pictures.
    • Can go from f2 to f16. This is pretty cool for a built-in feature.

  • Video
    • 2x faster
    • Records stereo sound
    • Low Light Video was very impressive in the on-stage demo.

 

  • Battery Life
    • 30 minutes more battery life for the XS
    • 1hr 20 mins longer with the XS Max

 

  • Dual-SIM. They did it. The leaks were right.
    • Dual SIM-Dual Standby
    • Uses eSIM. Now the iPhone has built-in SIMs like the iPad and Watch. A single physical and eSIM everywhere but China.
    • Chine requires 2 physical SIMs, and they get a special model.
    • Looks like this will be available worldwide.

  • Environmental impact made the stage.
    • Touting that they run on 100% Renewable Energy.
    • Apple is setting a goal to end mining for component production
      • Using recycled tin in the Logic Board. 10,000 ton less tin must be mined to produce the boards.
      • More bio-based plastics and recycled plastics.
      • Touting the fact that Apple continues to support older devices.
      • Apple GiveBack
        • Apple will give value for a device, or will recycle it for free.

  • iPhone XR
    • Aluminum body
    • Colors, as expected.
    • IP67 water protection
    • Edge to edge LCD- Liquid Retina Display
    • 6.1″. Bigger screen than the iPhone 8 Plus.
    • Same operation as an iPhone X.
    • No 3D Touch, but has something called Haptic Touch in its place.
    • FaceID- the same hardware as available in the XS and XS Max.
    • Has the A12 Bionic chip. No little brother here.
    • Only a single camera system. The same 12 MP wide angle lens as the XS and XS Max.
    • They are doing Portrait Mode using Computational Photography. Taking a page out of the Google Pixel’s book here.
    • Battery life gives you 1 hr 30 min more batter life than the iPhone 8 Plus.

  • Pricing starts at $749. Preorders start on Oct 19. Ships on Oct 26.

 

  • iPhone XS and XS Plus Pricing and Availability

    • iPhone XS starts at $999. XS Max at $1099. No price reduction. Wah Wahhhhh.
    • Preorders for the XS and XS Max start Friday, with availability next week.
    • iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 remain in the lineup. The SE and 6 Plus are no longer with us.
