Apple is Taking a Second Run at the Magazine Business Thanks To a Big Aquisition

Apple is anything but boring. You never know when a crazy rumor will come out, a patent for something off the wall will be awarded, or like today, they will buy a company out of the blue. My family and I were on a trip this weekend and driving back today. Before we left the hotel, I took a look around Twitter, Flipboard, and Apple News to see if there was anything going on that I needed to be aware of. There was little of note, and nothing that I needed to jump right on. I ended my driving shift after 2 1/2 hours only to find out that Eddy Cue announced Apple’s acquisition of popular subscription magazine service, Texture.

A Low-Cost MacBook Air Could Be a Big Seller for Apple

Last week, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicted that Apple will release a new 13″ MacBook Air with a lower price tag sometime in the second quarter. I find it interesting that a device many of us thought had been left for dead in the wake of the super-thin MacBook a couple of years ago still proves its worth in their product lineup. That is some remarkable resiliency, especially in the fast-moving tech world.

At one time it was the latest and greatest. The MacBook Air was the super-thin, super-light premium laptop that all comers were judged by. Now, it seems that it will be further confirmed in its role as the low-end value option in Apple’s laptop lineup. However, with the right combination of upgrades and concessions, it could still have one more good run before finally heading off into the sunset.

Would You Buy…an iPad with OLED Keyboard?

A few weeks ago, Apple Insider ran a story detailing an interesting patent that Apple was awarded. It covers a dual-screen device that is described vaguely enough that it could be either a MacBook, or an iPad Pro. That not insignificant detail aside, the key ingredient either way is the OLED keyboard section. While many Apple patents never materialize into anything, this one is worth thinking about, in my opinion.

Cool Things: RetroStone Ultimate RetroGaming Console

I have no problem admitting that I’m a sucker for retro gaming, and have been for years. While things like the NES and SNES Classic have appeal, I really prefer something a little more universal. I know that there is no shortage of DIY gaming-centric kits for the Raspberry Pi, but I just haven’t found the right one….until now.

Deals: FurniQi Bamboo Wireless Charging Side Table

Now I have seen it all. I have seen wood and marble wireless Qi chargers, that look a cut above the typical charging stand or mat. Now we have a company that has bypassed all of that entirely, and just made a small charging table. This successfully funded and produced Indiegogo project has earned solid reviews, and is an incredibly creative idea.

Is Now the Right Time for a HomePod Mini?

Based on the impressive sales numbers generated by smaller intelligent speakers such as the Amazon Echo Dot and the Google Home Mini, you might think a HomePod Mini is exactly what Apple should be releasing right now. They should definitely be working on it, and more than likely, such a device has already been prototyped in several potential versions. However, despite the potential for a brief sales boost today, I personally think that Apple should hold off on this move for now.

Outcast is a Good Example of What Apple Watch Apps Can Be

The situation with Apple Watch apps got some unexpected attention this week thanks to articles from noted Apple enthusiasts Marco Arment and John Gruber. In my opinion, it is good to get people thinking and talking about this again, because apps often seem to be the forgotten aspect of Apple’s sleeper-hit wearable platform. However, while I am glad to see attention being paid to this subject, I disagree with both of these articles, especially Mr Gruber’s.

Deals: Takieso Marble Wireless Charger

Wireless chargers are everywhere now. Thanks to Apple finally including wireless charging capability on the latest iPhones, these Qi wireless chargers have an even wider accessory market to address and more people to sell to.

With this has come a wider variety of these chargers. Not everyone wants a plain black mat sitting on their work desk or bed-side table. For those people, we have option such as the Marble Wireless Charger from Takieso.

Opinion: Tomorrow’s Planned Boycott of Apple Over NRATV is Myopic

I have never engaged in substantive political discussion here on the site, and its not something I plan to make a habit of. I only bring this issue up now, since the current re-awakening of the gun control debate has curiously intersected with Apple in a way that I doubt they ever would have foreseen.

In case anyone either wonders or cares, here is my baseline- I am not a Republican or a Democrat. In fact, I absolutely loathe the modern incarnations of both mainline political parties and the weak and pathetic candidates they routinely trot out. If that offends you, then you should probably stop reading now, because I am not sorry for it. I am a card-carrying Libertarian, and I am a Conservative by the classic definition, not the strange and decidedly not Conservative Republican one.

As for guns, I will say this for the record. I am a lifelong gun owner and shooter. I have hunted with my Dad since I was a kid. I received a lot of valuable instruction on how to handle and respect firearms while I was young, so I know what they are capable of and handle and use them accordingly. I still own many guns, but none of them are what you would call “assault weapons.” I am not an NRA member because I don’t approve of their use of fear tactics to hold a hard and unrealistic line on gun control.
