Great apps and a huge selection of great apps are a big part of what makes the iPad such an amazing device. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of – from serious productivity to pure entertainment. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Weekposts highlight these apps.

This week’s pick is CBS Sports, a nice little all-rounder sorts of sports app for the iPad.

CBS Sports offers scores, stats, news, standings, schedules and more for a good range of major sports. The news section includes Twitter streams that capture the latest views of players and sports writers and bloggers.

The app also offers live video for a limited set of sports and some CBS Sports TV shows. These include SEC football games, NCAA basketball, the PGA Tour, and shows from Jim Rome and others.

The main Scores area on the Home screen is nicely done, with coverage of ‘all sports’ in one view. There are also scoreboards and real-time stats for all the major sports covered by the app.

Speaking of sports coverage, it’s nice to see some non-US major sports covered well in the CBS Sports app. Many leading soccer *ugh, football) leagues are covered – including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, and top leagues from Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. Formula 1 is also covered.

The app is ad-supported but the ads are not too intrusive.
