Great apps and a huge selection of great apps are a big part of what makes the iPad such an amazing device. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of – from serious productivity to pure entertainment. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts highlight these apps.
This week’s pick is Duolingo – Learn Languages for Free. Duolingo is a popular and critically acclaimed way to learn languages, that has now come to the iPad.
The app lets you learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian from English; and English from French, Portuguese, Spanish, or Italian.
Duolingo offers to change the way languages are learned. It focuses on having fun while you learn and uses things like levels and lives and competing with friends to up the engagement levels.
I took a look at the app last week and tried it out with a few different languages. I was well impressed and shared it with my 10 year old daughter this week. That’s when I knew for sure that this app is a big winner.
We have tried out a huge number of language learning apps on the iPad together over the last couple of years. Duolingo is the first one that grabbed her right from the off and kept her interest. She is enjoying this app like a favorite game – relishing the challenges, correcting herself before I could, totally focused and having fun at the same time. That’s the ultimate test for me. I really want my daughter to enjoy learning more languages and I think Duolingo is going to really help in that area.
Here’s an App Store link for Duolingo; it’s a universal app designed to run on both iPad and iPhone.

Duolingo is great. I’m learning German with it and it’s great! I was leary since it’s free but, since it’s free, tried it and it’s well done.
