ESPN College Football iPad app

Great apps and a huge selection of great apps are a big part of what makes the iPad such an amazing device. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of – from serious productivity to pure entertainment. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Weekposts highlight these apps.

This week’s pick is a no contest type decision – it’s ESPN College Football. The new college football season really kicks off today (with apologies to the teams that played Thursday and Friday nights) and I’m as excited as anyone about it. This morning I’ve been getting even more psyched up by watching some early games and GameDay via the ESPN College Football app.

The app is touted as year-round companion for college football fans. I’m not one to give it heavy use during the off-season, but from here until mid January it’s definitely a great app to have around.

Video Clips

It’s got a wealth of cool features and a simple interface for browsing round all of them. These include:

— Breaking news and scoring alerts

— Personalized My Games scoreboard featuring any college football game you care about (team alerts for all 124 FBS schools)

— Comprehensive editorial coverage featuring game previews, recaps, analysis and highlights

— Video alerts for big plays, ‘moments after they happen’

— Bowl Bound section with weekly projections from Brad Edwards for every bowl game

There’s also quick access to live games, ESPN studio analysis, and exclusive clips from College GameDay.

Watch Live

GameDay 2

I have one complaint about the way the app works. When you want to see live games, GameDay, or any of the ESPN live stuff you’re switched out in a pretty clumsy way to the Watch ESPN app. This would be a little awkward if the switch was to another channel or provider, but it just seems dumb when all the channels and content and both apps belong to ESPN. Why not make this self-contained within the app?

Switch to GameDay

My one gripe aside, if you’re a college football fan with an iPad or iPhone you want this app – and it’s free.

Here’s an App Store link for ESPN College Football.
