Glasses iPad app

Great apps and a huge selection of great apps are a big part of what makes the iPad such an amazing device. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of – from serious productivity to pure entertainment. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts highlight these apps.

This week’s pick is by 1-800-CONTACTS. This is a real ‘wow factor’ iPad app and maybe the first app of its kind that I can recall being this good and this much fun to use. Here’s its App Store intro:

With for iPad, you can virtually try on thousands of glasses and sunglasses to see how you look from any angle in photo-realistic 3D. Try on frames from Ray-Ban, Burberry, Oakley, Versace, Maui Jim, and more — scaled to fit your face correctly. All from your iPad.

How cool does that sound? Well trust me, the app is far better than even that intro makes it seem.

The app’s interface is gorgeous and a pleasure to use. I haven’t looked at or bought sunglasses in years, but this app has me excited about them again.

It uses the video input from the iPad’s camera to create a 3D model of your head – so that you’re able to virtually try on glasses. The video instructions on how to do the 3D fitting are excellent. I’m generally a complete clod at following these sort of instructions and even I managed to breeze through the process in

Once you get through the quick set of questions and the 3D fitting the fun part begins and you can start selecting brands, and styles of glasses or sunglasses.

The touch gestures to turn your head and see how the glasses look from angles work incredibly well and really help with figuring out which pairs suit you best.

You can check out details on each pair of glasses, mark your favorites, and place an order right within the app. I could easily become a sunglasses shopping addict if I keep this app on my iPad for long. :)
