Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our Best Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.
This week’s pick is IntoNow from Yahoo. In a nutshell, this app is like Shazam for TV with a bunch of social features thrown in. Here’s a little piece of its App Store intro:
Just tap the green button when you’re watching TV- whether live or recorded – and IntoNow will identify the show and reward you with related content, personalized recommendations, and discussions to connect with friends. … Now for iPad, IntoNow introduces a true companion television experience with synchronized news headlines, in-depth sports stats, and tweets from your favorite actors.
It’s another real ‘wow factor’ iPad app. Just as with the Shazam app for song identification, it’s pretty amazing to surf around your TV channels, then just tap the green button, see it listening and receiving info, and watch it identify perfectly the show or movie you’re watching. Or the football game or other sporting event you’re tuned into.
The app lets you try it out a bit at the outset, then asks you to sign in. This is free and can be done via an existing Facebook account or creating a new account for the app. I just authorized it in Facebook.
It has been incredibly accurate in identifying very nearly everything I’ve asked it to so far – even when I was aimlessly surfing round cable channels. The only thing it had trouble with (and actually while there was a lot of surrounding noise) was one of the local news stations. Here are a few of the screens when it has just identified what I was watching:
At first I thought I just wanted the Shazam-like abilities and wasn’t too fussed about all the social elements – but I’ve rapidly grown to like those too.
It’s easy to share what your watching to Facebook, adding a comment with it or not. You can look for, add, and invite other friends from Twitter, Gmail, or your address book. And it’s actually quite cool to see what your friends are watching and even to look at the Everyone stream and see what’s popular. It will even send you an alert when you and a friend are watching the same show at the same time. I’m not sure I need that much social out of it, but it’s kind of a cool idea.
You also have one-tap access to info from IMDB, iTunes, and Netflix within the app.
One of the most fun uses of this app should be when watching sports. I fired up the Iowa-Michigan game a little while ago and it’s very cool to see the number of people tuned in and also the discussion you can follow or join in on right within the app.
For better or worse, most people I know talk quite a lot about the things they watch on TV. IntoNow gives you a great forum to do that in, with lots of nice bells and whistles – and of course the very slick Shazam-like show identifying capability.
Here are the app’s requirements: Minimum iOS 4.0+ is required on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A built-in or external microphone is required.
And here’s an App Store link for IntoNow.
