Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our Best Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.

This week’s pick is iTunes Movie Trailers, Apple’s own movie trailer and information app, recently updated for the new iPad’s retina display. Here’s the opening of its App Store intro:

iTunes Movie Trailers puts the newest and most exclusive movie previews in HD in your hands. Browse trailers, clips, and featurettes for the biggest Hollywood blockbusters and independent cinema; view stunning HD photos; explore a year-long calendar of movie releases; find showtimes near you and get ticket info directly from your iPad or iPhone.

iTunes Movie Trailers

The app offers up hundreds of movie trailers for movies that are currently in theaters, coming soon, and more. The trailers can be viewed in HD or SD. When you select a movie you’ll get trailers, clips (sometimes including behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ type clips), details (genre, release date, director, cast, more),and a gallery section.

The Top 25 section has sub-sections for Most Popular Trailers, Weekend Box Office, Top Reviewed from Rotten Tomatoes, and iTunes Top Movies.

There’s a Calendar section that’s easy to swipe through for a look at release times of upcoming movies throughout the year, and a search bar for finding movies.

The In Theaters section gives you a week’s worth of showtime listings for theaters in your area. It’s not as good as Fandango, but it’s useful to have this section nonetheless.

Showtimes

You can save favorite movies and theaters, and even save images to use as iPad wallpapers for any movies that have a gallery section. And of course the app has AirPlay support so you can watch trailers up on a big HDTV screen if you’ve got Apple TV.

If you’re a movie fan this is an easy app to spend a lot of time with. Oh, and Dark Shadows with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp teamed up again looks hilarious – I’m looking forward to its May release.

Here’s an App Store link for iTunes Movie Trailers.
