One of the best things about using an iPad is all the great apps that we can run on it. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts highlight these apps.
This week’s pick is izik – a fresh new visual search app that’s optimized for the iPad’s swipes, taps, and gestures. It’s powered by the ‘spam-free’ Blekko search engine and is touted as the first search engine that’s optimized for tablets.
In addition to being very touch friendly, izik also offers very visual and image-rich results to searches. Initial results don’t come up as quickly as they do in Google powered search in Safari, but once the page is loaded it’s quick and easy to get around and choose which results you’d like to look at.
On the results page in izik you swipe up and down to move through the categories of results. These include Quick Answer, Looking For, Top Results, Images, Latest, and more. The categories also change according to what you searched for – so for instance a search for ‘iPad’ will offer additional categories like Apple, Gadgets, and Tech; while my search for Labrador brought up Dogs and Pets.
You swipe left and right to move through the results in each of the categories. A single tap on the category heading bar expands or collapses those results. You can also select categories to focus in on via the nav bar at the bottom of the screen.
A left sidebar shows trending topics, and is easy to toggle visible or hidden with a quick tap.
. The app works well in both landscape and portrait modes.
Here’s an App Store link for izik.
