Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our favorite Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.
This week’s pick is Squrl – the superb social videos app. The elevator pitch for it from its developer is as follows:
Squrl is a social, watch-later video service that lets you access video content across multiple providers and devices.
Squrl is all about videos. Discovering good video content from a wide range of all the best sources, organizing it, sharing it, and seeing what others are sharing. Here’s a little more intro type information from its App Store page:
Squrl is a clever way to collect and organize video from many different providers, in one easy to use app.
• Have you ever wanted to collect video from many different websites in one place?
• Are you tired of hunting through a half dozen or more iPad apps to view your videos?
You’ll always know where to find your videos, no matter where they are on the web, with Squrl.
The app makes it easy to organize favorite videos (or just videos you want to watch) into Galleries and Collections – based on topics or people or whatever works best for you. It’s also got a Squrl It button for your desktop browser’s bookmark bar – so when you spot a cool video on the web you can have it added to your Queue in the Squrl app with a single click.
Squrl is also an extremely social app. It’s easy to discover great videos by following users or just browsing round other users’ galleries, and likewise people can see and follow your galleries. You can plug in your Facebook and Twitter accounts for when you want to share videos as well.
This is a feature-packed app, but it has a great UI and is easy to get around. It’s got full AirPlay video support, so if you have an Apple TV you can enjoy all your favorite video content on the big screen.
When I first spent time with the app back in April I said this about it:
If you like watching videos on your iPad, or on Apple TV, or both, then Squrl is rapidly going to become your best friend.
Since then the app has remained a big favorite for me – it’s often my preferred option over TV when I feel like watching something on the iPad or TV screen.
Here’s an App Store link for Squrl; it’s a universal app that will run on both iPad and iPhone.
