One of the best things about using an iPad is the great apps that we can run on it. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts celebrate these apps.
This week’s pick is Time Out London for iPad, the shiny new iPad edition of the famous London entertainment and city guide magazine. It provides an excellent, curated selection of interesting places to see and things to do in London – and there are few if any cities in the world that have more to offer than London.
When I lived in London Time Out was always considered to be the go-to title for finding great things to do and see in London – an equally great resource for tourists on a short visit and long-time Londoners. It’s great to see this excellent title come to the iPad.
The app’s front page offers a topical feature – today it’s ‘Things To Do This Weekend’ – suggestions for the weekend include bars, restaurants and cafes, music, art, comedy, events, film, sports, and theatre.
On the bottom navigation bar there are buttons for What, When, and Where sections.
The What section includes: art, bars and clubs, comedy, museums and attractions, music, nightlife, restaurants and cafés, shopping, theater, and things to do. When includes today, this weekend, this week, and next seven days.Where includes all different sections of London from the West End to Chelsea and Kensington and a number of different areas.
You can double-tap on any of the entries in What, When, or Where to see all the relevant items in that category – so you can view just Music or just Museums and Attractions, or you can narrow things by using What and Where and When together as filters – so you can look for just bars and pubs in Kensington and Chelsea for instance, or just music in Central London in the next 7 days.
The photography throughout the app is very good. The reviews are short and sharp and include ratings from Time Out and from users.
The app has a a search bar, lets you mark items as favorites, and has standard sharing options via Facebook, twitter, and email.
And of course one huge advantage the iPad edition has over the print title is that it is updated daily.
London is a spectacular city with an amazing array of places to see and things to do and truly has something to offer for everyone. Time Out London for iPad should be a great help for anyone who wants to make the most of their time in London.
