Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our Best Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.

This week’s pick is Vodio – a social videos app for the iPad that some have said is a bit like Flipboard for videos. Although there are some similar features, I don’t think that’s a very accurate comparison – but nonetheless this is quite a nice app to enjoy videos on your iPad.

Here’s a bit of its App Store intro:

Vodio for iPad delivers personalized video content unlike any you’ve ever experienced before.
Take video consumption on the go to the next level, by creating your very own personalized video streams from dozens of content services. Free up your time by watching the most talked about videos, instead of searching through hours of videos you might like.
With the wealth of video content available, knowing what to watch isn’t always as easy as it seems. Vodio lets you discover and enjoy the best videos, based on what’s being shared around you as well as your personal preferences and interests.

I’ve had the app installed for a few days and, as is the case with many good iPad apps, it’s been chewing up lots of my time. It’s entertaining enough to have that ‘just one more’ sort of effect that you get when munching on a particularly good bag of chips.

Vodio presents you with a series of Channels covering popular video categories – these include Buzz (a sort of overall What’s Hot section), Music, Entertainment, Sports, Tech (yay), and Comedy. You can add more channels easily – though right now the range is not huge – the four you can add on to the default selection are Science, News, Movies, and Style.

The channels are shown in a coverflow-ish sort of interface that’s easy and fun to work with. You swipe left and right to move through the channels, and swipe up and down to browse through the individual videos in each channel. When you’re viewing a video, you can also swipe left and right to move to the next / previous videos.

The app lets you connect with some of your social accounts, to help personalize the content you’re seeing. You can connect to your YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook accounts. You can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each video, and easily share a video to friends via email, Twitter, or Facebook.

Of course the videos range from the sublime to the ridiculous – but there’s lots of great content to browse through and I’m already finding the app a big time suck, as mentioned above.

My one wish list item for the app is a search function. I think that would be nice to have to help unearth content on specific topics.

If you enjoy watching videos on the iPad, this is an app you’ll want to spend some quality time with.
