iPad App of the Week: Alphabeats

Alphabeats iPad app

Great apps are a big part of what makes for a great mobile (or even desktop) device. As iPad users, we’ve been fortunate that right from the start there have been rich pickings when it comes to great iPad apps – and we continue to be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding excellent apps for just about any purpose. Our weekly picks for iPad App of the Week celebrate some of these, and appear here every Saturday.

This week’s pick is Alphabeats, a great combination of word games and music games. Here’s a little slice of its App Store intro:

Alphabeats remixes spelling into a fast-paced action challenge, set to pulse-pounding tracks from exciting electronic artists. Catch the falling letters to make words, challenge yourself and your friends to score the most points, and you’ll find that you can’t stop playing – and that spelling is even cooler than you thought.

Select Song

Alphabeats is easy to play, though quite challenging (at least for me) to get good at. You pick a song and start catching letters as they fall to form words – with longer words gaining you more points. The object is to form as many words and get as many points as you can by the time the song ends. There’s a very good, quick How to Play demo too.

The app’s notable features include:

▶ Play along to six tracks from music masters such as Disasterpeace and Big Giant Circles!
▶ 15+ extra songs available to download!
▶ Three difficulty modes: Casual, Tricky, and the fiendishly difficult Spellfire!
▶ Use powerups wisely – shrink your word, multiply your points, or blow up letters you don’t want!
▶ Word of the Day gives you bonus points for learning new vocab!
▶ Challenge your friends using Game Center!
▶ Global score rankings – can you make the longest word ever

Letters Fall to the Beat

This game reminds me of a mashup of the oldest of old school iOS games, Tap Tap Revolution, and a fast-paced word game. It’s definitely quite a different sort of challenge for those who enjoy iPad and iOS word games.

Here’s an App Store link for Alphabeats; it’s priced at $1.99 and is a universal app designed to run on both iPad and iPhone.
