Great apps are a big part of what makes for a great mobile (or even desktop) device. As iPad users, we’ve been fortunate that right from the start there have been rich pickings when it comes to great iPad apps – and we continue to be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding excellent apps for just about any purpose. Our weekly picks for iPad App of the Week celebrate some of these, and appear here every Saturday.
This week I’ve got a couple of picks, both new releases in the App Store this week and both great looking iPad wargames. They are Civil War: 1864 and Desert Fox: The Battle of El Alamein.
What the two games have in common, apart from their recent release dates, is that they both come from development studios with stellar track records for bringing great wargames to the iPad. Civil War: 1864 is by Hunted Cow Studios – and it’s the latest in their series of Civil War games for iPad that includes the excellent Civil War: 1863. Desert Fox: The Battle of El Alamein is from Shenandoah Studio, who have already brought two great strategic wargames to the iPad: Battle of the Bulge and Drive on Moscow.
The two development studios take very different approaches with their iPad wargames. Shenandoah Studio’s games are extremely in-depth and strategic and play very much like old-school printed board games of this genre. They also bring a rich amount of historical detail to their maps and the games overall, as well as excellent AI and even AI options that allow you to play against different opposing commanders.
Hunted Cow games are not as deeply strategic, but offer a nice array of unit types and still do require some good strategic thinking while offering more fun graphic elements to the mix.
Here’s a little of the App Store introduction and notable features for each of the games:
