Apple is Taking a Second Run at the Magazine Business Thanks To a Big Aquisition

Apple is anything but boring. You never know when a crazy rumor will come out, a patent for something off the wall will be awarded, or like today, they will buy a company out of the blue. My family and I were on a trip this weekend and driving back today. Before we left the hotel, I took a look around Twitter, Flipboard, and Apple News to see if there was anything going on that I needed to be aware of. There was little of note, and nothing that I needed to jump right on. I ended my driving shift after 2 1/2 hours only to find out that Eddy Cue announced Apple’s acquisition of popular subscription magazine service, Texture.

A Low-Cost MacBook Air Could Be a Big Seller for Apple

Last week, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicted that Apple will release a new 13″ MacBook Air with a lower price tag sometime in the second quarter. I find it interesting that a device many of us thought had been left for dead in the wake of the super-thin MacBook a couple of years ago still proves its worth in their product lineup. That is some remarkable resiliency, especially in the fast-moving tech world.

At one time it was the latest and greatest. The MacBook Air was the super-thin, super-light premium laptop that all comers were judged by. Now, it seems that it will be further confirmed in its role as the low-end value option in Apple’s laptop lineup. However, with the right combination of upgrades and concessions, it could still have one more good run before finally heading off into the sunset.

Apple Needs to Make Siri Great at Something

With the HomePod showing up on my doorstep next Friday, I’ve been doing some thinking about Siri lately. Why is the overall impression of Apple’s digital assistant so negative? There are recent surveys and tests showing it as being competitive with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Cortana in some areas. There is real evidence that many “normal” users aren’t as dissatisfied with it as we in the tech community and the “Apple bubble” are. So what is the problem? Where is the disconnect?

Analysts Are All Over the Place Leading Up To Apple’s First Quarter Earnings Call

Between the glowing reports of recent massive successes and predictions of impending doom and gloom, it’s hard to get a feel for what is actually going on with Apple, and how their First Quarter Earnings will be perceived. One consensus seems to be that Apple’s past quarter will be the biggest in company thanks to strong iPhone X sales, as well as solid Mac, iPad, and Watch sales and Apple’s growing Services business and sales in China.

2018 Predictions and Resolutions: The Year of Siri

A couple of weeks ago, I predicted that 2018 will be the Year of Face ID for Apple. Based on the early device rumors of what is coming this year, that looks to be a pretty safe bet. I think it is just as much of a given that 2018 will also be the Year of Siri. It’s about time, as a focus on pushing Siri forward in terms of both features and user satisfaction is already long overdue.
