When I first saw the video demo of the Gorillamobile Ori for iPad 2 case, I was impressed with how slick and versatile this case looked. I ordered one that same day and it arrived this morning.

As first impressions go, color me very impressed indeed with Ori for iPad 2. When I’ve spent more time with the case I’ll do a full review, but in the meantime here are a few reasons it is making a very favorable first impression:

Flowfold iPad Sleeves are a superb case for the iPad 2 or original iPad. They started out as a Kickstarter project last year; the project got funded and these excellent cases are now available to order. I was fortunate enough to be given a sample unit to test while the Kickstarter project was going on, was thoroughly impressed, and became a project backer.

I’ve been using the Flowfold sleeve for a couple months now and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s one of my favorite cases for my iPad 2. If you’re a regular (or even semi-regular) reader here then you know I’m rather fond of iPad stands. Rather fond in the same sort of way that dogs are rather fond of bones. Yup, I’m a big fan of iPad stands. I’ve currently got four on or around my desk.

So when TUAW’s Mike Schramm mentioned a handsome new stand from Ten One Design that they’d spotted at CES, it caught my eye straight away. This new stand for the iPad 2 is called the Magnus. Two things about it are very appealing right off the bat:

– It uses a strong magnetic link to hold the iPad 2 in portrait or landscape mode. Maybe my affection for the iPad 2 Smart Cover is getting the best of me, but I just love this idea. 

– It has a beautiful, minimal appearance – giving a sort of ‘Look Ma, no hands’ look to the iPad 2 and stand.

Here’s more detail on the design of the Magnus:

Magnus is first machine-crafted from pure aluminum and then hand-finished using the latest manufacturing techniques. After that, customized magnets are installed into the base, and rubberized feet are fitted to the bottom surface.

Our designers targeted a reduced silhouette. Viewed from the side, you see only the iPad’s tilt, and a flat plate on the desk. From there, the engineering took over.
Magnus may look like it’s defying gravity, but it feels like a permanent attachment. You may need two hands to separate Magnus from your iPad.

Here’s an iPad 2 accessory that caught my eye this week – the Esquire Bluetooth Keyboard iPad 2 Case from Case-mate. Here’s a bit of its description from Case-mate:

There are a large number of keyboard cases for the iPad 2 available now, but this one appeals to me for three reasons:

– It’s got a leather case, rather than the hard cover style cases I see on most of these.

– I much prefer a magnetic closure to clasps and similar methods.

– The keyboard is touted as a full,  near laptop-style model.

In fact I liked the sound of this enough to order one, which I did yesterday. So I’ll soon have some thoughts to share on how well this case lives up to the hype.

The Cregle iPen is a new Kickstarter-funded stylus for the iPad – one that has some unique and powerful features about it. It has already far exceeded its Kickstarter funding target and should be available as a retail product early next year.

Here’s a little about how it works and why it’s unique:

The Cregle iPen transforms the iPad into a content creation device, not just a content consumption device. iPen is the first active digitizer stylus that allows you to write with precision directly on the iPad. Unlike the passive digitizer used in the typical iPad stylus, iPen writes like a real pen with accurate positioning and palm rejection features that passive products simply cannot achieve.

With the Cregle iPen’s active digitizer, the attached receiver picks up the iPen’s signal and its precise position as it hovers above the screen (whereas a passive stylus can be located only when the user touches the screen). This crucial advantage allows iPen to actively transmit 60 samples per second to pinpoint the pen’s exact location.

The video demo above is very impressive – showing how the iPen can make really tiny strokes within cells on a graph paper style note screen.

Another impressive thing about this project is it already has support from a number of iPad apps, which will allow for the use of the iPen in their apps – and Cregle are actively looking for more partnerships with app developers.

This looks like it will be a very good option for iPad users who are looking to use handwriting recognition a lot, or who need a precise stylus for any reason.

I swear I’m not spending my days seeking out iPad related projects on Kickstarter – but just lately I keep getting approaches from or coming across quite a few that are knocking my socks off.

And I have to say the Styló Stylus for the iPad 2 is another one that I would buy with no hesitation. Here are its two big, unique selling points:

The Scosche fitRAIL is a nice-looking mount system for the iPad and iPad 2 – for use when you’re working out on a treadmill or similar piece of exercise equipment. If you’re tired of just listening to tunes or bringing a magazine or book along when you workout, the fitRAIL lets you make full use of your iPad – so you can read an eBook or iPad magazine, watch a movie, or try out whatever else you’re coordinated enough to do on the iPad while exercising.

The fitRAIL is said to be attachable to ‘almost any type of workout equipment’ – and of course it is made to hold the iPad securely while using it. It also folds up to fit into a travel pouch that comes with it. Here’s a little more detail on it:

An iPad or iPad 2 simply rests in the mounting tray of the fitRAIL and is secured against the frame with the patented stickGRIP material. I’ve been using a ZAGGfolio iPad 2 keyboard case for a few months now, and I like it a lot. So I was interested to see that ZAGG are now offering a range of colors for the ZAGGfolio.

You can now get the folio (the case) in a choice of 11 colors, including Dark Blue, Metallic Red, Smart Green, Smart Orange, and more. You can also choose a keyboard color – silver, black, or white.

My favorite thing about the ZAGGfolio for iPad 2 is its excellent keyboard. It’s the nicest one I’ve seen yet for one of the case + keyboard combos. It has great spacing between the keys and is very comfortable to type on.

At $100 and with a range of colors to choose from, I’d say this is a good deal with a high quality iPad 2 keyboard case if you happen to be looking for one.

I swear I didn’t wake up this morning thinking that today should be all about styluses – but the early portion of the day has turned out a little that way. I got two promo emails this morning, one right after the other in fact. Both about styluses. One a product that’s ready to ship soon, one a Kickstarter project looking for support.

I tried liking another Gelaskin. I really did. But I missed Dr. Gonzo – it didn’t feel the same seeing the back of my iPad 2 without seeing Gonzo making trouble back there.

I had tried re-applying my original Gonzo gelaskin a while back – and though it went mostly well there were a few sections that just refused to stay on properly. So I ordered another one recently and got it re-applied just a couple days ago. At $30 a pop these are not a throw-away expense, but I still haven’t found one I like as much so it was worth it to me.

As usual, my install of the gelaskin is far from perfect but it feels good enough to live with quite happily. Plus, hey, Gonzo is back. Fear and Loathing on the iPad 2 once again.

PlugBug is the latest iOS accessory from Twelve South. It’s a travel charger for the iPad or iPhone that slots right into a MacBook power adapter – saving space and plugs.

Twelve South are the makers of a number of excellent and elegant accessories for Mac and iOS devices. I’m a huge fan of their versatile compact Compass Mobile Stand for the iPad and iPad 2 and my wife is currently deeply in love with their BookBook case for the iPhone 4.

That’s my lovely new iPad 2 Smart Cover up above. It’s one of the newly added dark gray polyurethane models.

I’d been wanting to try out one of the polyurethane models for quite a while, as I’ve only ever used the leather one I bought on iPad 2 launch day.

I took the new smart cover out of its box two minutes ago, and figured I should grab a photo of it while it as clean as it will ever be. So far I quite like the dark gray – though it’s too soon to make any comparisons on using the polyurethane as opposed to the leather one of course.

If I spot any interesting differences in using this new model I’ll be sure to share some thoughts on them here.

Gelaskins are ultra-thin, ultra-light skins for the iPad (and a huge number of other mobile devices) that feature striking and unique artwork from a wide range of artists.

They’ve been my favorite companion for my iPad 2 and its smart cover for some time now – partly because they offer such unique and compelling designs and also because they offer a little bit of protection for the back of my iPad 2 while keeping its wonderful lightness.

So I was happy to see a promo email from the today touting their fresh new crop of designs for the iPad, the iPhone 4 / 4S and other devices. 

As always, there are lots of wildly creative choices – and they’re good value at $29.95 for iPad and iPad 2. I’d love to say I grabbed a brand new design when I visited Gelaskins today – but instead I ended up ordering an old favorite back – the Dr. Gonzo one by Ralph Steadman.

TouchFire is an interesting Kickstarter funded tactile keyboard add-on for the iPad. Here’s a better description from the developers of the product:

TouchFire is transparent, tactile keyboard that lays on top of the iPad and makes typing feel like a traditional keyboard. It even allows people to type without looking at the iPad’s screen.  It’s so thin and flexible that it lives in the iPad’s cover when not in use.

Kickstarter is the home of ‘crowd-funded’ projects and the crowd apparently likes the TouchFire quite a lot. It has exceeded its initial funding target in less than a week.

Apple has done a minor refresh on their line of Smart Cover cases for the iPad 2.

In particular they’ve made some changes to the polyurethane line of smart covers. They’ve discontinued the orange cover and replaced it with a dark gray one.

Another change is that the microfiber lining inside the polyurethane covers is now color-matched to the cover itself – and the covers are said to be ‘more vibrant’.

Pricing for the polyurethane and leather smart covers remains the same – at $39 and $69 respectively.

I’ve been wanting to try out one of the polyurethane smart covers for a while now (I currently use a navy blue leather one) and I ordered a dark gray one this morning. I should have it by around the end of the week.

The folks at DODOcase have created The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore DODOcase for the iPad 2 that is inspired by the wonderful iPad eBook.

Here’s a little more background on that inspiration:

From the moment the DODOcase team first read The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore we were both amazed and inspired. We felt Morris’ journey of discovery and love of books and stories mimicked our own love of bookbinding. We have worked with the team at MoonBot to create an iPad case that Morris Lessmore himself would have loved. The result looks like it jumped right out of Morris’s hands.

And more on this new case:

The exterior covers are hand crafted in DODOcase’s San Francisco book bindery from a striking red faux leather and is ordained with Morris Lessmore’s signature hat and cane mark on the cover, and his “M” on the spine. These embellishments are created using century old book stamping techniques. The interior is a cream colored linen.

I did a review of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore back in July. It is easily the best eBook I have seen for the iPad and also one of m y all-time favorite iPad apps.

I think the DODOcase inspired by this book is a great idea and it looks like it is a superb case in its own right.

This morning I received the Oberon Design iPad 2 Cover shown above – a review unit provided by Oberon. The design I chose is called the Hokusai Wave and I hope that despite my terribly poor photographic efforts you can get some idea how gorgeous this thing is.

And that would be my strongest first impression of this case – that it is just a beautiful design and made with lovely thick quality leather. Or, as the Oberon site describes it, ‘old school leather artistry’. Hurrah for old school then.

I’m not sure how well this case will serve when using the iPad heavily (I’ll soon put that to the test) but it is certainly a fantastic looking option for a carrying case.

Griffin has released their new TechSafe Case for the iPad 2 this week. It’s actually a case plus a lock-down system intended to keep your iPad 2 secure while you’re on the go.

The case itself is said to be a good, protective one and also offers this handy extra functionality:

The ZAGGfolio is an iPad keyboard case. It’s quite a good one too, but when it was initially released there was a problem with the case’s clasp that keeps the iPad secured in it.

ZAGG were very pro-active in acknowledging and addressing the issue. They emailed everyone who had purchased a ZAGGfolio to let them know about the issue and to state that they had corrected it and would be issuing replacement cases.

My replacement case arrived yesterday, within the timeframe promised in ZAGG’s email on the subject.

Happily, the new case looks good and the clasp works like a charm. I know that my iSource colleague, James Rogers, who initially reported on the clasp issue, has also said that his replacement case is working well.

Great work by ZAGG on fixing this issue and issuing replacement cases – that’s some top-notch customer service.

I’ll be reviewing the ZAGGfolio and / or comparing it with the Clamcase keyboard case soon.

So my iPad 2 and its lovely smart cover have a new companion. A new ultra-light Gelaskin for the back of the iPad 2. It’s called Cable Cranes and the artwork is by Nanami Cowdroy.

It’s funny – my writing colleague and friend Thomas Wong got this gelaskin months ago and I thought it looked a bit too busy for my taste when I first saw it. But it has grown on me, so after my recent removal of a ZAGG leatherskin from the iPad 2 and an attempt at re-applying my first Gelaskin (Vintage Dr. Gonzo) I decided to order it. My re-application went pretty well by the way, but it had a couple little bits at the top that just wouldn’t stay on firmly anymore.

I received the new Gelaskin today and took about 15 minutes removing the previous one (which left the iPad 2 spotless and unscathed) and putting the new one on. I’m not at all sure why, but my best ever application of a Gelaskin was my first ever time doing it. After that, I’ve been a bit of a one-hit wonder, never quite churning out another pop hit near-perfect install.

Today’s effort was OK – it hugs all the ports and buttons very nicely, but I got some little creases in a few places. They’re all totally my fault from moving just a bit too quick, but I’m content with the result for now. Oh, and I love the way this skin looks and of course the way it keeps the iPad 2’s wonderful lightness.

As we learned last month, the ZAGGfolio iPad keyboard case has an issue with the clasp on the case, and ZAGG was very pro-active in  not just acknowledging the issue but emailing everyone who bought one and making clear that they would be replacing the cases.

It was a strong response and a very good approach to see from a leading accessories vendor.

This morning I received an email from ZAGG confirming that my replacement ZAGGfolio case shipped, and giving an expected delivery date of September 15-19. These dates are in line with the 4-6 weeks that ZAGG promised when they sent their email advising of the problem with the case.

Well done ZAGG – excellent customer service on this issue.

The Trooper – the latest limited edition iPad 2 Keyboard Case from ClamCase – has got some rave reviews  as one of the iPad keyboard cases on the market.

I just got mine a few days ago, but I thought I’d share some early notes and impressions on it. Here they are in no particular order, sort of a stream of consciousness while getting to know it:

– It feels much lighter than I expected this type of accessory to feel. That’s mostly a good thing, although it also makes it feel a little less solid than I expected, including at times when typing (it feels a little wobbly).

– It doesn’t feel terribly ‘Apple-like’ to me initially – not elegant at all in its look and feel.
