The iPad has out-sold the Mac since inception and is now about three times the volume. However, the growth rate in the Mac has not changed much.

The new data shows that the iPad alone would be the largest PC vendor and Apple with iPad and Mac combined is selling 5 million more units (or 30%) than the top PC vendor.

Selling three times as many iPads as Macs at a time when Mac sales continue on a nice upward trend is impressive – but that last bit that I’ve bolded above is the truly amazing part. The new data (latest quarterly results) shows that iPad alone would be the biggest PC vendor if it was considered a computer.

Maybe the Post-PC era that Steve Jobs talked about is not so far off.

The iPad is an amazing and versatile device, and this week is providing plenty of evidence of the amazing numbers that back that up. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has also offered up some thoughts on why the iPad is such a huge success and how huge its potential is.

Here are a few of those amazing numbers that have caught my eye, along with some of those thoughts from Tim Cook, and a few of my own thoughts:

– As Alicia noted the other day, Apple sold over 40 million iPads in 2011, and over 15 million in the last quarter of the year. Both numbers are well ahead of all other tablets sold combined. The 15 million sold is also triple the number of Macs sold in that quarter – and it was a record quarter for Mac sales. Tim Cook said in Apple’s earnings call earlier this week that he believes there will come a day when the tablet market is bigger than the PC market.

That day may not be that far off, as highlighted by this comment noted by TechCrunch:

Towards the end of the earnings call, Tim Cook dropped a huge nugget of information: led by 15 million iPads sold last quarter, the tablet market is now larger than the entire desktop PC market.

–  More than 55 million iPads have been sold in less than two years on the market. Among the dozens of supposed rival Android, Windows, Blackberry and other tablets it doesn’t look likely that any of them have even sold 10 million thus far.

During the question and answer segment of today’s Earnings Conference call, Apple CEO Tim Cook made some interesting comments in response to a question of what the company thinks of their competition on tablet market. What follows is a paraphrasing of his direct remarks.

He began by stressing that Apple was happy with the 15.43 million iPad units sold in the final calendar quarter of 2011, explaining that it was consistent with their long-term belief that the tablet segment is a huge opportunity for Apple over time. Indeed, he explained that they believe that the tablet market will be larger than the PC market; tablet sales are already seeming to exceed desktop sales in US.

With regards to the competitiveness of the iPad, he feels that the iPad is in a class by itself. Their focus is on optimization of apps that take advantage of larger canvas. The iPad has a wealth of quality apps available, compared to only a few hundred on competitors’ offerings.

He closed by saying that they don’t see limited function tablets such as e-readers being in the same category as iPad. These limited-function tablets will have customers and they will sell a fair number of units. However, he opined that people who want an iPad will not settle for a device with less functionality.

He delivered a smile-inducing full stop to his remarks, saying that last year was supposed to be year of the tablet. Rather it was Year of the iPad.

Well said.

The news today that Apple has sold 15.43 million iPads during the final calendar quarter of 2011, means that the total number of iPads sold for 2011 (that’s sold not shipped) is just over 40 million. The last quarter’s sales are 111% growth compared with the same quarter in the previous year.

These are mind-boggling stats no matter now you slice it.

No doubt the tremendous iPads are largely behind the record revenue of $46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.06 billion.

With these solid numbers in hand, the future looks bright for Apple and iPad. Stock price is currently over $420. iBookstore is now being fed by ebooks created on the new iBooks author and iTunes U is free to fly.

So much for the year of the iPad killer.

Apple’s education announcement event this morning focused on their efforts to reinvent textbooks on the iPad. As part of the launch of these efforts, today has seen the release of the new iBooks Author, a free Mac app to be used as an authoring / publishing tool for textbooks and books of all types, and of iBooks 2.

iBooks 2 is really the 2.0 version of iBooks – and it already features some of the shiny new textbooks for the iPad, 8 of them right now. These include Algebra 1, Geometry, Environmental Science, Biology, and more. One of the most impressive looking of these is ‘Life on Earth’, a new digital biology textbook for high school students. This one is by E.O. Wilson, a professor emeritus at Harvard, distinguished biologist, and two-time Pulitzer winner. Right now it has a preview of the book and a sample chapter available for free, with future chapters to be released this spring.

One of the best things about this morning’s news on iPad textbooks is the pricing levels. iBooks textbooks will be priced at $14.99 and below – significantly lower than current prices for printed textbooks.

If you already have iBooks installed, there’s an update for it available today, that updates it to the 2.0 version that’s needed to download these new textbooks.

I followed Macworld’s excellent liveblog coverage of Apple’s ‘Education Announcement’ event this morning. For me, this was one of the most exciting Apple events I’ve ever tuned into. I got more and more excited as the event went on, because I feel like the things that were announced are going to have a massive impact on education and students of all ages – and the iPad’s impact in educational institutions.

I’m still digesting the news and gathering my thoughts, but here’s a quick recap of some of the most interesting announcements:

– Apple, with the collaboration of some blue-chip publishing partners, is setting out to reinvent textbooks on the iPad. There are already over 1.5 million iPads in use in education institutions. Many of them in 1 to 1 programs.

– iBooks 2.0 (updated today and live now in the App Store) is going to make textbooks everything that traditional textbooks cannot be -  interactive, fun, gorgeous, engaging, with features like 3D models, interactive elements, multimedia, powerful advanced search, notes, highlighting, definitions, lesson reviews and study cards, and more.

– Apple has partnered with three companies who together account for 90% of the textbooks sold in the US – Pearson, McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

– There is already a new Textbooks section in iBooks, with 8 high school level titles including Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and more.

IDG recently did a global survey titled iPad for Business Survey 2012 – looking at usage of the iPad by IT and business decision-makers. The survey has some interesting findings and a lot of good news for Apple in terms of the range of ways the iPad is being put to use by business users, and the way it is replacing a laptop for a significant number of these users.

Here are some of the most notable findings:

– Over 90% of respondents use their iPad at work:

Fully 51% of IT decision-makers say they “always” use their iPad at work (and a further 40% say they sometimes use it at work). Out-of-home usage is even more intense, with 79% of IT decision-makers saying that they “always” use their iPads “on the move”.

– More than 10% of these IT and business decision-makers say their iPad has “completely replaced’ a laptop. A further 54% say the iPad has party replaced their laptop.

– As the image at the top of this post shows, these professionals are using their iPad more for work communication and other work-related activities than for personal communication and leisure activities.

The picture that emerges from this survey involves IT and business professionals using their iPads as dual-purpose work/leisure devices, with a relatively strong emphasis on work functionality, and an extremely heavy emphasis on on the move usage.

A report issued by ABI Research today says that app downloads by iPad users have topped the 3 billion mark. That’s a big number in its own right – but the report also notes that the iPad hit this milestone around six months faster than the iPhone. That seems pretty amazing, given the way the App Store took off when it first hit the iPhone back in 2008.

The iPad’s dominant position in the tablet market is also highlighted in the report, as it notes that app downloads on all Android tablets are estimated at around 400 million – less than one seventh of the iPad’s total. Possible reasons for the disparity cited in the report include OS fragmentation, less choice and lower quality. And then there’s the much lower install base of course as well.

I’m off to the iPad App Store now to do my bit to get it moving towards 4 billion downloads. :)

Looks like the iPad may become a big hit in the small and medium business sector next year, following on from its massive success in the consumer space and major inroads in the enterprise arena.

As reported by Apple Insider, a new NPD survey of SMBs in the US (businesses with less than 1,000 employees) found that no less than 73 percent plan to buy iPads in major quantities in 2012. Here are a couple of the striking numbers and findings from the survey and the chart above:

The iPad, just as it is in the consumer market, is synonymous for ‘Tablet’ in the business market, leaving Apple poised to take advantage of the increased spending intentions of these SMBs (small and medium businesses) … Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD

– 90% of the companies polled plan to match or increase their spending on tablets in 2012.

This momentum in the SMB space follows on from the Apple’s success in establishing the iPad as the clear and dominant leader in the enterprise space. Apple announced back in October that 90% of the Fortune 500 were deploying or testing the iPad – proof that it’s a surprisingly big hit in the enterprise. And a recent survey by Good Technology – a leading provider of middleware for mobile devices in the corporate arena – showed that the iPad accounted for an astounding 96% of tablet activations tracked by the company.

Apple has updated its list of printers that support AirPrint again. The last time I checked the list back in November there were four manufacturers supported – HP, Canon, Epson, and Lexmark.

Now Brother printers have been added – specifically, 18 Brother printers are listed, from the DCP and MFC series.

The list of supported Lexmark printers has also grown – from just 3 to 11 that are now supported.

AirPrint is a great feature for iPad and iOS devices, so it’s good to see this list is finally starting to grow at a good rate.

A new study on iPad usage shows that users of the iPad and iPad 2 are hugely satisfied, that they’re using a lot of apps, and using the iPad for work as well as fun.

The study by Software Usability Research Laboratory (SURL) shows not only that over 83% of respondents are satisfied with the iPad, but that the clear majority (at 62%) rate it as ‘Excellent’.

Some other interesting findings in the study:

– Things that users like best about the iPad included variety of apps available, overall ease of use, the larger screen size, and portability. Least liked items included poor quality of some apps, the inability to play Adobe Flash, and problems typing with the keyboard. It’s good to see that apps, as expected, are a huge part of the overall iPad experience. And I expect the whole ‘missing Flash’ factor will become less and less of an issue now that even Adobe have pretty much given up on it.

Apple’s latest TV ad for the iPad 2 is titled ‘Love’. It’s the sixth in the series that started with ‘We Believe’ – all featuring excellent narration by Peter Coyote. This one has another good ending line:

Getting lost in the things we love has never felt quite like this.

This one features a handful of people engaged in things they love on the iPad 2 – from a basketball coach showing his team a play in a huddle to a young kid enjoying a dinosaur app in a tent.

My favorite part is when they show a woman painting a landscape while standing out in it with the iPad 2. For years now I’ve been fascinated by the amazing art that is created on iOS devices. I’ve even got a little site devoted to it.

This ad, like all in this series, speaks volumes about how versatile the iPad is.

A recent survey (commissioned by a publishers trade association, the Association of Magazine Media) has some good news for publishers of digital magazines and iPad edition. As noted by All Things Digital, it looks like most of those who are reading digital editions are enjoying it and planning to increase the amount of time they spend with digital editions.

It finds that two-thirds of people who read magazines on tablets and e-readers think they’ll be spending more time with digital issues over the next year. Many of them — 46 percent — are consuming more magazines — both in print and digital form — than they did before they got their hands on an iPad.* And 63 percent of them want more digital stuff to read.

… The report does offer some guidance for the industry: 89 percent of readers want publishers to adopt a uniform way of navigating magazines, and 69 percent like watching in-app videos that run less than minute.

I’m a big fan of iPad newspapers and magazines. If I was asked for ‘guidance for the industry’ here are a few points I’d mention:

– Subscription pricing needs to be sensible. It still often isn’t and often fails to offer good, fair deals for existing print or online subscribers.

– Issue download sizes need to keep getting smaller. The promised key feature of Newsstand – automatic issue and new content updates in the background – needs to be delivered. Right now it is not working for most titles I’ve seen. It should be faster and easier to get into the latest issue.

As expected, the iOS 5.0.1 firmware update released today for iPad (and iOS devices) has fixed the recently exposed iPad 2 security issue, the one that allowed anyone with a smart cover to bypass the iPad 2’s passcode lock.

I’ve just tested this on my iPad 2, after installing iOS 5.0.1, and the passcode lock bypass no longer works. If you want to test for yourself, here are the steps that worked up until the 5.0.1 update:

• Take a locked, passcode-protected iPad, and wake it up, but do not enter a passcode
• Hold the power button until the “Swipe to turn off” button appears.
• Close the Smart Cover (or use a magnet)
• Open the Smart Cover
• Hit “Cancel” at the bottom of the screen (to cancel the shutdown)

This would leave you wherever the iPad 2 was prior to being locked. Now this leaves you where you still need to enter your passcode.

Good to see that vulnerability eliminated fairly quickly.

A couple weeks back, a major security flaw in the iPad 2 was discovered, one that allows anyone with a Smart Cover to bypass passcode lock security on an iPad 2 running iOS 5 (and possibly on older firmware as well).

Now a fix is on the way from Apple. Last night they released a beta version of the iOS 5.0.1 firmware update. 9to5Mac have tested and confirmed that this update fixes the passcode bypass security issue.

It appears that Apple has fixed the issue by not allowing the iPad 2 to go to sleep by way of the Smart Cover closing while on the power off menu. 

We should see the iOS 5.0.1 update released within the next few weeks.

Here’s some very good news for owners of an original iPad. The first update for iOS 5 – iOS 5.0.1 – will ad multitasking gestures for the original iPad.

These slick new gestures – which were added to the iPad 2 with the release of iOS 5 – allow you to use four or five fingers to: pinch inwards to return to the home screen from any app, swipe up to launch the multitasking bar, and swipe left or right between apps. They’re one of my favorite things about iOS 5 and they make it much easier and faster to do things on the iPad – especially in terms of rapid app switching.

There was never any good reason that I’m aware of to not have these gestures available on the original iPad – so it is very good to see that they’ll be added in the first iOS 5 update. Hopefully this update will be released quite soon, as it also address some battery life issues and a security and the iPad 2 passcode bypass security vulnerability.

Walmart is currently offering a discount on iPad 2 Smart Covers when you purchase an iPad 2 via their online site. If you buy a 16GB WiFi iPad 2 at $499 you can choose one ‘starter accessory’ to go with it.

Some of the starter accessory items are priced the same as they are at Apple – for instance the Camera Connection Kit is listed at $29. Both the polyurethane and leather iPad 2 smart covers are discounted by $20 when added to this bundle though. So you can get a polyurethane smart cover for $20 (instead of the standard $39) and a leather smart cover for $50 (instead of the standard $69).

This deal can be purchased online and then delivered to your nearest store it looks like, via the ‘site to store’ option.

If you happen to be in the market for a 16GB iPad 2, know you want a smart cover, and have a Walmart outlet nearby then you may want to check out their page for this bundle.

From what I can see in comments at this site and around major social networks, an awful lot of iPad users have no love at all for the new Newsstand smart folder. I even ended up sharing a tip recently on how to get Newsstand in a folder, as the next best thing to being able to delete it.

Despite all the hate for Newsstand from some users it looks there are more than enough others who are enjoying it to make at least one major publisher happy. As Apple Insider reports, Condé Nast have announced this week that the launch of Newsstand along with iOS 5 has given a huge boost to their titles:

Magazine publisher Condé Nast announced on Tuesday that weekly digital subscription sales of its titles jumped up 268 percent following the arrival of Newsstand and iOS 5 on the iPad earlier this month.

The company released a press release noting that, since Newsstand was released on Oct. 12, new subscription sales for all nine digital editions of its titles have gone up 268 percent, while single copy sales are up 142 percent, as compared to the previous eight weeks.

Those sure seem like impressive numbers for Condé Nast’s nine iPad titles – which include Wired and The New Yorker.

I actually quite like the idea of Newsstand – as it has saved me some home screen space and it provides a quicker way to browse for iPad newspaper and magazine titles. I’m not at all impressed with how the supposed automatic, background downloads of new issues for Newsstand titles is working thus far, or not working so far I should say.

The Guardian iPad Edition was launched nine days ago in the App Store. Today The Guardian has shared some numbers on how the app is doing so far – starting with the number of downloads since its release: 145,880.

Apparently that’s a number that The Guardian brass are quite happy with: Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media, said:

Since launching last week, the new Guardian iPad edition has already been downloaded over 145,000 times. This number of downloads in a week is a fantastic achievement, and shows the appetite among our readers to access our content in new, digital ways. This is our most successful app launch to date, and an important milestone as we continue to evolve into a digital-first news organisation.

Apple did their Q4 2011 financial results call this afternoon. Their fiscal fourth quarter is roughly in line with the 3rd calendar quarter of the year, having ended on September 24, 2011.

Here are some of the notable iPad numbers announced on the call:

– 11.12 million iPads sold in the quarter – a 166% increase from the year-ago quarter.

– 92% of Fortune 500 testing or deploying iPads – up from 86% last year.

– iPads now being distributed in 90 countries.

– Another mention of the IDC figures for Q2 of 2011 – showing the iPad with around 3/4 of the tablet market.

I think that iPad sales number puts the year’s total for 2011 at right around 25 million, with the holiday quarter still to come.

iOS 5 – the much-anticipated latest major update to the iPad and iPhone operating system – has been released by Apple today.

It’s now available to install on your iPad. To update to iOS 5 on your iPad here’s what you need to do:

– Make sure you have iTunes open on your PC.

– Connect your iPad to your PC via its sync cable.

– When you connect the iPad you’ll see a popup letting you know that there is an update available – ‘a new iPad software version (5.0). Click the Cancel button.

– Do a full backup and sync of your iPad with iTunes.

– Disconnect your iPad and then reconnect it. You’ll see the popup again to update to software version 5.0. Click Download and Update and then just follow along with on-screen instructions and status updates.

Update: It looks like iTunes may be forcing a backup as part of the update process for iOS 5, or at least it is on my iPhone 4. I still prefer to have a manual backup and sync before updating, but it looks as is this is now being incorporated into the update process.

Sales numbers and discontinued devices offer clear evidence that the iPad is dominating the tablet arena. As Apple Insider notes, the latest report from comScore on tablet-generated web traffic makes this even more clear.

The group notes that Apple’s iPad now accounts for 97.2 percent of all tablet-originating web traffic, driving home the reality that competitors have not yet released a significant tablet competitor.

So all the other dozens of supposed iPad rivals, combined together, account for less than 3% of web traffic. Wow.

Oh, and the iPad has also now passed the iPhone as the single iOS device that generates most web traffic.

As ever, I’m happy to say that my own site stats show a great amount of visits from iPads, more than from any other operating system.

The October 17 issue of Time Magazine has Steve Jobs on its cover, and has a number of excellent tributes to Jobs within its pages – including a brief one from Walter Isaacson, the author of the soon-to-released authorized biography of Jobs.

The issue also features some wonderful photos of Jobs over the years. If you’re a fan of Steve Jobs or at all interested in him, this is a great issue of Time to pick up, as a printed or digital keepsake.

Here are just a few of the quotes and figures in this issue that caught my eye:

– This is the 7th time Jobs has been on the cover of Time – a number the editor says ‘puts him in the category of presidents and other world leaders’.

– The editor’s note also says:

Over the years, we’ve done our best to track the life of a man who changed all our lives irreversibly and for the better.

Yesterday’s big Apple event was all about the new iPhone 4S, but the first portion of things featured Tim Cook (Apple’s new CEO) highlighting some very impressive numbers in all of Apple’s core product areas.

Some of the numbers for the iPad are just staggering – like these:

– Customer satisfaction ratings show a 95% score in a recent survey. This is described as ‘unheard of’.

80% of the top hospitals in the US are now testing or piloting the iPad.

– In the enterprise space, the iPad is also seeing unprecedented interest. 92% of the Fortune 500 are testing or deploying the iPad.

– And of course there’s the stat shown in the image at the top of this post: three out of four tablets sold in the US are iPads – per IDC Q2 2011 numbers, and here’s betting that number rises in Q3.

Talk about universal appeal – looks like the iPad has it.
