One of the many cool new features in iOS 5 is the ability to split the keyboard on the iPad. This can make it much easier to type quickly and to thumb type in both portrait and landscape mode on the iPad.

For some people it can also be a little awkward as it significantly alters the positions of some of the letters that are smack-bang in the middle of a standard keyboard. It looks like Apple thought about this, and they’ve included a handy little feature to address it. But for some reason they chose not to mention this feature or make it obvious in any way, which makes it slightly less handy.

Until you find out about it that is. Now, thanks to the clever folks at the Finer Things in iOS site, we know that there’s a set of hidden or invisible keys that sit just beside T, G, and V on the left side of the split keyboard, and just beside Y, H, and B on the right side. As you can see in the image shown above, you can tap in the blank area just outside the keyboard next to the T (outside of the keyboard background too) to get a Y, and type just outside the keyboard next to the Y in order to get a T, and so on.

Good to know – anything that helps people to make better use of the iPad’s on-screen keyboard is always a big help.

Notification Center is one of the headline features in iOS 5. It’s a major improvement to how notifications were previously delivered in iOS and it works wonderfully well on the iPad. It lets you see all your notifications in one clear list view, and it’s instantly available with just a quick swipe gesture from anywhere on the iPad.

For those of your who are newer to the iPad or iOS 5, or even just to notifications on the iPad, here are a few handy little tips for working with Notification Center:

How To Open and Close Notification Center on the iPad

– To open Notification Center from any of your home screens or any app that displays the status bar, just swipe down from anywhere on the status bar. If you’re in a full-screen app that doesn’t show the status bar, you swipe down from anywhere at the very top of the page (on the bezel of the iPad) and you’ll see a little set of bars pop up in the middle of the screen at the top – tap and swipe down on those to invoke Notification Center.

– To close Notification Center you look for the same set bars at the bottom center of the Notification Center view, and tap and swipe up

I generally use the Mail app on the iPad in landscape mode, because I like that it shows both the Inbox (or whichever mailbox is selected) message list (as a sort of left sidebar) and shows an individual selected message content, in the right portion of the page.

This morning I found a nice tip for making the Mail app on iPad nicer to use in portrait mode – an easy swipe gesture to pull up the Inbox message list when you’re in portrait mode. Here’s how:

All you have to do is swipe left to right to see the message list as a popover on the left side of the page. Swipe right to left to hide the message list again.

When you do the left to right swipe to bring up the message list, you can then swipe again in the same direction to show the list of all your mailboxes and folders.

Although you can accomplish the same things by tapping on the Inbox and Mailboxes buttons, using gestures feels far easier and faster to me. It makes using Mail app in portrait mode a whole lot nicer I think.

Hat tip to Mac OS X Hints for sharing this hint, which I’ve expanded on a bit here.

One of the many nice features of iOS 5 is the ability to split the keyboard on the iPad. Doing this can be very useful and can make typing faster and easier at times. I’ve found I’m using this feature more and more and finding it very effective.

I use it when I have the iPad 2 in portrait and landscape mode and it allows me to reach characters I just can’t get to if the keyboard is in its standard docked mode unless I hold the iPad with one hand and peck away at the keys with the other.

One drawback of using the split keyboard is that if you are writing a longer note or editing a longer document with a good number of paragraphs, you’ll find that the keyboard is on top of areas you’re trying to type in at times. When this happens you can’t see what you’re typing. Maybe this doesn’t bother those of you who are skilled touch typists, but I like to be able to have a glance at my writing to spot and correct any typos.

Happily, there’s an easy solution to this little problem – you move the split keyboard around the page so that you can see your latest lines of typing.

Here’s a quick, useful iPad tip that will help you out if you’ve ever accidentally deleted an app you had installed on your iPad. Or perhaps had a child who accidentally deleted an app you still want on your iPad.

Luckily, regardless of how an app was deleted, it’s very easy to get it back on your iPad. There are a few ways to get a deleted app back. I’ll list them in order of how easy they are, with the easiest method listed first – here are the steps to get back deleted apps on your iPad:

Use the Purchased Tab in the iPad App Store:

– Open the App Store app on your iPad.

– Tap on the Purchased button in the bottom nav bar.

– Tap on the ‘Not On This iPad’ tab at the top of the screen. That will give you a complete listing of all apps that you have purchased (including free apps) that are not currently installed on the iPad.

– Tap on the download symbol next to the app you want to restore – it’s the symbol next to the app name, a cloud with a downward arrow inside it.

Here’s a very quick basic iPad tip for those of you who would like to be able to always see the percentage of battery left, instead of seeing just the battery icon and having to guess at how much is left.

If you’d like for the percentage of battery remaining to also be displayed in the status bar at the top of the iPad screen, here’s how:

– Open the Settings app

– Tap on General in the left sidebar

– Tap on Usage in the list of sections in the right hand pane

– Under the Battery Usage section at the bottom of the Usage page, tap to turn ‘Battery Percentage’ on

That’s it. Once you’ve done this, you’ll always see the remaining battery percentage alongside the battery icon in the iPad’s status bar.

Here’s a question I see asked quite a lot by newer iPad users: how do you attach a photo to an email? Happily, this is very easy to do. Here’s how to add a photo as an attachment to an email on the iPad:

– Open the Photos app on the iPad (That’s right things work a little backwards in terms of what you’re used to on a deskop PC) and go to the Camera Roll or whichever album has the photo you want to attach.

– Tap to open the photo that you want to add as an attachment to an email.

– Tap on the Share button near the top right of the screen (it’s actually the third one in from the right, the one that looks like a rectangle with a rightward-moving arrow coming out of it).

– Then tap on the first command choice – ‘Email Photo’.

That will open the Mail app with the selected photo attached. Then you just enter in the recipient/s name as normal, add your subject line and body text and hit Send as usual.

Here are a couple more useful things to know about this:

– When you tap the Share button, as you can see in the screenshot above, there are a number of other actions you can take – including assigning the photo to a contact, using it as your iPad wallpaper, adding it to a tweet, printing it, and more.

Here’s a neat little iPad tip that I spotted over at Mac OS X Hints this morning. It’s a slick alternative way to select multiple photos in the iPad photo library.

The way I’ve always known to select multiple photos in any album in the photo library is to tap the Share button at the top right of the screen and then tap on each photo you want to select. This of course comes in very handy when you want to copy or delete a number of photos at once.

The new method takes some getting used to, but is quite effective once you get the hang of it. Here’s how it works:

– Go into any album in your iPad photo library, and tap on the Share button at the top right of the screen

– Tap with two fingers held close together (I find index and middle easiest, your mileage may vary) and hold just for the briefest moment and then drag the two fingers across all the photos you want to select.

If you’re not keen on using up tons of storage space on your iPad with music but still would love to have access to your full iTunes Music Library on the iPad at times, here’s a quick and easy tip to help you achieve that.

All you need to do is use the Home Sharing feature in iTunes. This will only work when your iPad and computer are on the same WiFi network, but should still be very useful if you don’t store much music locally on your iPad.

Here’s how you get it working:

– In iTunes on your computer, click on Advanced on the menu bar, and choose ‘Turn on Home Sharing’. You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID and password. Once you enter those details you’ll get a confirmation message letting you know that Home Sharing is on.

The iPad’s screen capture ability can be useful for a number of reasons – from showing someone how a web page looks to sharing an app screen and lots more.

One of my favorite ways to use the screenshot capability, that I’ve noticed many people are not aware of, is to create new images with it. Specifically, you can create a new image by zooming in and getting more of a close-up type shot. It’s very easy to do – here’s how:

– For the sake of this post, lets start with a typical shot of a devilishly handsome Labrador – like the one shown above. It’s a fun pic, but I want to just focus on his great big happy face.

– Start by selecting the image you want to work with in your photo library.

The iPad is a great device even when its offline, but like nearly all computing devices these days it is much greater when it’s connected to the web. For most of us, most of the time that means connecting via a WiFi network when possible. So it is terribly frustrating when an iPad won’t connect to a home WiFi network.

So I thought I’d share some basic troubleshooting tips for when your iPad won’t connect to your WiFi network, and some potential quick fixes.

If your iPad doesn’t connect to your home wireless network the first thing to do (apart from ensuring that WiFi is turned On via Settings> WiFi) is check to see whether it is able to connect to any WiFi network. If you have a friendly neighbor see if they will let you do a quick test. If not, take your iPad to a local coffee shop or a similar location with free WiFi.

Tabbed browsing in Safari is one of the many new features that iOS 5 has brought to the iPad. Many users who are fond of tabbed browsing in their desktop browsers are happy to see this feature come to the iPad’s built-in browser. Others – I’ve recently discovered – are not at all happy about the change.

One very handy feature when using tabs in Safari on the iPad, that I’ve only just learned about, is the ability to quickly reopen recently closed tabs. To do so, all you you need to do is tap and hold on the + button for a new tab. When you do, you’ll see a list of the tabs you most recently closed – and can restore them with a single tap.

I’m a big fan of tabbed browsing – so this is a feature that will get lots of use on my iPad 2. I hope it’s helpful for some of you as well.

I spotted this tip via Right Now in Tech.

How do I get my XYZ newspaper or magazine app to go into the Newsstand folder?

I’ve seen a few people asking this at forums and social networks, so I thought I’d give it a quick mention. Usually they’ve tried dragging the app in question into the Newsstand folder and seen that this doesn’t work.

The answer is simple. You can’t add apps to Newsstand manually. When newspaper and magazine apps are updated to support Newsstand (and its supposed but failing automatic background downloads) they are automatically moved into Newsstand for you.

So if one of your newspaper or magazine titles isn’t in Newsstand yet, it’s because the publisher hasn’t got it ready to be in there yet – and all you can do is wait for that to happen. So far it doesn’t look like a huge percentage of titles are supporting it. So far on my iPad 2 I have seven titles that are in Newsstand and thirteen that are not.

One of the many new features in iOS 5 for the iPad is the ability to split the on-screen keyboard. When you do this it splits neatly in half, with one half near the bottom left of the screen and the other half near the bottom right.

This can be quite useful at times – for instance, it makes it much easier to thumb type when you’ve got the iPad in landscape mode, as the distance to the keys on each side is much less than with the keyboard in its standard mode.

It’s very easy to make use of this feature. Here’s how:

– From within any app that makes use of the keyboard, tap in a text area to bring up the keyboard.

– Then just place a finger from each hand on the keyboard and tap and pull your fingers outwards. The keyboard will split as soon as you start moving both fingers outwards.

– To put it back together, just make the opposite motion – pushing your fingers inwards.

– You can also tap and hold on the keyboard button at the bottom right of the keyboard to bring up a popup where you can choose to dock/undock and split/merge the keyboard.

That’s it – incredibly easy and often useful. Oh, and you can do this with the iPad in portrait and landscape mode, and on both the original iPad and iPad 2.

AirPlay Mirroring is one of the coolest new features in iOS 5 for the iPad 2. It allows you to stream everything that happens on your iPad 2 wirelessly to an HDTV via Apple TV (2nd gen only).

When it’s turned on everything you do on the iPad, regardless of what app you’re in or what you’re doing, is mirrored to the TV screen – hence the name. It can be used to take your iPad gaming to a whole new level (check out Real Racing 2 HD to see a game that fully exploits this), to show a slideshow of favorite photos, to be able to walk around a room while running a presentation from the iPad 2, or for any number of similar purposes.

Here’s what you need to do to turn on AirPlay Mirroring on your iPad 2:

– Have iOS 5 installed on your iPad 2

– Make sure your Apple TV software is up-to-date. You can check for updates on the Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Update Software.

– Have your TV turned with Apple TV active and showing.

– Double-tap the home button on the iPad to bring up the Multitasking Bar.

I really like the idea of Newsstand in iOS 5 – I’m a big fan of iPad editions of newspapers and magazines so having a smart folder and dedicated store for them is right up my alley. I am well aware though that some of you here, and around the interwebz in general, are not fond of Newsstand. In fact I get the impression there’s a fair bit of hatred for the little fella.

So here, courtesy of The Coding Massacre, is a quick guide to how to banish Newsstand to a folder:

– A key to this is being very quick in moving Newsstand into a folder at just the right time, so I suggest making sure you have Newsstand near two other apps that you can use to make a new folder.

– Tap and hold on any app icon to get them into ‘wiggle mode’

– Take one app and place it onto another to create a new folder. As soon as the apps are in the folder and folder creation animation starts, drag Newsstand into the folder.

If you try to launch Newsstand from inside a folder it will cause a springboard crash – so if you decide you don’t hate it anymore and want to use it, take it out of the folder you stuck it in before trying to open it.

There ya go. That’s how to banish Newsstand to a folder. You can even call the folder ‘Apps I Hate’ if that helps.

PDF is a hugely popular document format, because this file type is so universally supported. The iPad offers good support for PDFs, partly via some built-in apps and features, and partly due to a wealth of good 3rd party apps that focus on handling PDFs.

If you need to work with PDFs on your iPad, here are some of the best ways to get them onto your iPad, view them, and edit them.

Ways to Get PDF Documents onto the iPad

Email:

The mail app on the iPad will let you view a PDF attachment, and will also let you use the ‘Open In’ feature to open an attachment in any installed app that supports the format. So you can always email yourself a PDF from your desktop, or have a work colleague send you one via email when needed. Of course, this can become a tedious and impractical method when you need access to a large number of PDF documents at once.

Apple has a support document that outlines their recommendations on how to clean Apple products including iPads, Macs, iPhones, displays, keyboards and more.

Keeping your Apple devices clean is an important regular maintenance task of course, and it’s good to see some tips on how best to do this from Apple themselves. If you’ve spent time cleaning your devices, most of these may be known to you, but it’s still a good refresher.

Here are the general tips that apply to all the products covered by the support document:

Use only a soft, lint-free cloth. Abrasive cloths, towels, paper towels, and similar items may cause damage to the item.

Disconnect your Apple product from any external power sources.

Disconnect any external devices and other cabling from the product.

Keep liquids away from the product.

Don’t get moisture into any openings, and don’t use aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives.

Do not spray cleaners directly onto the item.

If you want to get rid of a few photos in the iPad’s Camera Roll it’s easy enough to just tap and delete within the Photos app on the iPad. If, however, you’ve imported and built up a collection of dozens or even hundreds of images in the Camera Roll that’s not a barrel of laughs anymore.

Here’s my quick suggestion for the best / fastest way to delete a large number of photos from your iPad (if you’re using a Mac):

** As an extra cautious step, you may want to run one full ‘Import All’ process without the ‘Delete after import’ checkbox enabled, and check that all the images imported successfully before running a second one per the steps below.

– It’s a good idea to save your Camera Roll photos to somewhere just in case you want some or all of them back at a later date – this process using the Image Capture app accomplishes this.

– Launch the Image Capture app on your Mac – it’s probably not in the dock, so you’ll need to launch it from the /Applications folder.

– Connect your iPad to your Mac.

– Image Capture should recognize the iPad right away, and start displaying thumbnails of the images you have in the iPad Camera Roll.

If you own an iPad or iPad 2 WiFi + 3G model and you need to talk to your carrier about anything involving cellular data, you’ll need to know your Cellular Data Number. It’s one of the first things you’ll be asked for by an AT&T or Verizon rep if you contact them for support or questions relating to your 3G data plan.

Fortunately, it’s very easy to find this number and others that your carrier may want to know on a support call.

As you can see in the screencap above, you will not find your Cellular Data Number in the Cellular Data section of the Settings app. You will find it under the Settings > General > About section, just below the Serial Number item.

Just a few spots down you’ll also see your device’s IMEI number, which the carrier may also need to know.

I realize this is a very basic tip, but it’s also that will save you a little bit of time if you’ve never had to look for the Cellular Data Number before – and any little bit of time savings on a call to AT&T or Verizon is a very good thing in my book.

If you’ve ever been a beta tester for an iPad (or iOS) app, or used any of the developer beta versions of iOS, you know that you need to have your iPad’s UDID (Unique Identifier) registered in order to take part in any of this beta testing.

If you have no desire to ever do beta testing, you can ignore this post and not worry about knowing what a UDID is.

For those of you who want to be or are already involved in beta testing here’s a very quick tip on the easiest way to find your iPad’s UDID, and send it off to a developer.

Use a free app.

Yes, you can use the old-school method of connecting your iPad to your PC and iTunes and clicking on the Serial Number field on the Summary tab – and then go to the Edit menu and hit Copy and paste it into an email.

But the much faster way, that doesn’t require you to be connected to a PC, is just to use a good free app. Two good ones to use are UDID Sender and UDIDit. Both will automatically show your UDID as soon as you open them and offer to paste it to the clipboard or place it into a new email for you. UDIDit is an iPhone app that runs in 1X or 2X mode on the iPad, while UDID Sender has a full iPad app – and again, both are free apps.

I had been running my iPad 2 jailbroken for a few weeks, and recently restored it back to stock. Sometime during its jailbroken period, it lost the ability to save photos and images to the Camera Roll.

I honestly have no great thoughts on what caused the issue – it started around the time of my troubles with the iUSers jailbreak app but that may be unrelated. In any case, one fine day I could no longer save an image from Safari, or Photo Transfer app, or any other app, to the Camera Roll.

Though I worked around the problem for a while, it became increasingly frustrating, and often slowed me down when working on posts and reviews. When I did my recent restore I thought that would be the end of the issue, but alas it persisted even after a full restore.

My web searching for solutions to this issue yielded nothing useful. Over this weekend I got fed up with the problem and started racking my brain for possible fixes. I had a vague recollection of similar issues in the past with the iPhone – and of a fix involving the folder where Camera Roll images are stored. After a while I thought I remembered that folder being called /DCIM/ something?
