Early iPhone X Plus Rumors Are Gaining Steam

Over the last four days, we have had two different reports on the 6.5″ iPhone rumored to be coming this year. The first, which came from Asian site MacX, shows a 6.5″ screen and digitizer that is reportedly from a trial run of production equipment.

2018 Predictions and Resolutions: The Year of Face ID

2013 saw the introduction of TouchID, but as popular and highly reviewed as it was, it was the next year when the technology truly arrived and came into its own. It showed up on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the iPad Air 2, and the iPad Mini 3 in the Fall of that year, and it was improved across the board. Not only did it make it across the entire mobile product line, but its speed and accuracy also improved noticeably.

Apple’s BatteryGate: One Man’s Intentional Device Slowdown is Another’s Peak Demand Management

Stories about Apple throttling the processor speed of older devices with worn batteries have been everywhere the last few days. There have been several threads on Reddit and Twitter about it, most of which embrace the conspiracy theory that Apple is doing this solely to encourage iPhone upgrades. However, while the debate online may be largely one-sided, it is actually more complex than most critics will admit. One thing is certain now. There is a verifiable core of truth here that is undeniable- Apple IS throttling the processors of devices with worn batteries.

Apple is Making the iPhone X Available In-Store on Nov 3

Apple is turning back the clock to the days of the Launch Day Lineup

With a sneaky little press release this morning, Apple has shaken up the iPhone X preorder process again. After already bending it somewhat in favor of existing iPhone Upgrade Plan customers, the company has decided to make the iPhone X available in its stores on launch day, as well. This should go smoothly. Stores open at 8 AM local time according to the press release. I especially like the line that encourages walk-in customers to arrive early. I think some people will take that to mean this afternoon.

The iPhone 8 Plus Battery Swelling Issue Will Be Interesting to Watch

I’ll be clear right out of the gate- right now the reports of iPhone 8 Plus batteries expanding and cracking phones are statistically insignificant. Whatever anyone thinks of the early sales of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, there are enough of them in the field that five to ten reports of this occurring doesn’t indicate a wide-ranging problem. This is only a brewing story at this point because it’s Apple, and it would be similarly the case if it was Samsung or Google. If this was happening with LG or Huawei phones, would we know right now? Probably not. Continue reading

What Constitutes Success for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus?

There has been no end of discussion about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and how boring most of us “tech-types” find them. There are early conjured “sales figures” and anecdotal evidence for and against good sales numbers. There have also been the typical disaster predictions and the hand-wringing over how Apple has apparently lost its way. Just listen to this week’s This Week in Tech podcast for a perfect example.

Understanding People’s Emotional Reactions to Apple

If you are an Apple fan, I’m sure you are aware of the emotional reactions that the company brings out in people, both good and bad, positive and negative. Apple’s most ardent supporters are often referred to as the ‘faithful’ and even labeled as a cult because of the strong devotion that some of them have to the company. On the flip side, you have the “haters” who tend to go to great lengths to deride Apple and anything they see as being associated with the company, and insult anyone they see as a follower. If you are an Apple fan like me, you have likely been called an “iSheep,’ a mindless follower, or far worse before.

Apple Adds Mail-In Option to iPhone Upgrade Program

According to a report by Engadget, Apple has added some flexibility to its iPhone Upgrade Program ahead of today’s iPhone X announcement. Just a few days ago, I was wondering if Apple would start pushing this program more, and this is definitely a positive sign.

If Apple Wants to Boost their iPhone Upgrade Program, the iPhone Edition is the Perfect Opportunity

I brought up the iPhone Upgrade Program a couple of weeks ago, asking whether it is time for Apple to unveil a version for the Apple Watch. However, with the announcement of the new iPhone Edition/X imminent, it is time to focus on Apple’s true flagship, and its existing upgrade program. I think that this particular launch presents a unique opportunity for Apple to grow their iPhone Upgrade Program and foster an even closer relationship with their customer using the anticipation of this highly anticipated tenth anniversary version of the iPhone.

Samsung and the iPhone Edition Price- A Different Take

I came close to writing what would have been a “me too” article yesterday on the report by KGI covering Samsung’s dominance of the OLED display market and the resulting higher iPhone display prices. I even started typing before I ultimately decided to delete it. There’s nothing wrong with being one of many to report on the same news, and anytime KGI and/or Ming Chi-Quo have something to say, it is definitely notable Apple news.

The issue I had wasn’t with the “me too” part. It was with the natural assumption that the iPhone Edition’s price is Samsung’s “fault.” I even put that in my original headline at first, before backtracking and thinking about it. Then, after thinking a little more, I just backed away from the keyboard for the night. While it seemed natural to blame Samsung for the Edition’s price increase, based on what I believe about politics and economics, I don’t actually believe it’s true. And I STILL almost fell for buying into it.

iPhone Plus Owners- Are You Willing to Downsize to Get the Latest and Greatest?

I have been a Plus owner since Apple first went big with the iPhone 6 Plus, and I haven’t looked back. There is no way I would return to the traditional size iPhone at this point. The bigger screen fits the way I use the phone perfectly, especially when I am in the field at work. Also, the fact that the bigger phone also comes with a bigger battery has meant I haven’t needed a Mophie battery case for the last three years. After my time as a Plus user, I am completely sold on the concept of the large-screen phone.
