Bigger Really is Better, at Least for Me

Launch days rarely work out for anymore. I thought I had it all set up today, and that I would be able to come home a little early to start playing with the new toys. Well, real life and work both intervened and that didn’t happen. In fact, I didn’t get home until after 8 PM, so my phone is still restoring, and I’ve only had a little while to play around with my new 44 mm Apple Watch.

A Look Back at the iPhone X

My iPhone XS Max will arrive sometime tomorrow, along with many thousands of others across the US and the rest of the world. I was ready for this phone as soon as I laid my hands on the iPhone X a year ago, so I’m ready to see how much size matters. That said, this is a good time to look back on what I can honestly say is my favorite smartphone that I’ve owned to this point.

iPhone Preorders by the Numbers

Some of the usual suspects have started to weigh in on Apple’s Watch and iPhone XS and XS Max preorders. Leading off, Ming-Chi Kuo says that sales are following the pattern that I suggested yesterday (I make no claims of genius or inside knowledge, just common sense). He reports that sales of the iPhone XS Max are meeting expectations, which I don’t think is a surprise. It has a novelty factor that the XS no longer holds. Speaking of the XS, Kuo says that pre-orders are “lower than expected.” I don’t find this surprising in the least, either, as the majority of people who wanted this design got an X last year.

The Watch Series 4 Stole Apple’s Show, but the iPhone XR is the Real News of this S Year

Now that the dust has settled, many in the tech press and analyst community are proclaiming that Apple’s iPhone announcement event was boring. To be fair, I can’t blame hem too much. The Apple Watch Series 4 grabbed some headlines with its bigger screen and impressive new health features, but the consensus on the new iPhones is that they don’t really bring anything new to the table.

Review: Sandmarc Photography Edition for iPhone X

I have been using and reviewing iPhone accessory lenses, lens cases, and lens kits going back six years now. I’ve tried products from most of the major brands, and some others that aren’t so well known. All of these photo accessories have one thing in common- they are designed to augment and enhance the already ample capability of the iPhone’s camera.

While Apple and other smartphone manufacturers have done amazing work with the space they have available in these increasingly thin devices, they are ultimately bound by the laws of physics. And that is the reason that photo accessories exist. They take the smartphone camera out of its small shell and add capabilities beyond what are currently possible, even with the big money and magic that Apple puts into its lenses and photo processing software.

I’m Just Over Here Holding Out Hope for Pencil Support on the New iPhone

I’ve been begging for it for the last two years. With the big changes that came with the X, I was hoping that last year would be the year. However, it wasn’t to be. I can understand it, since there was already so much going on with the new design. I thought this would be the year. A new, large screen iPhone X Plus sounded like the perfect candidate. There was even a rumor a few days ago that gave me hope, but I lost a little of it today.

New Rumors of Apple’s Coming Event and iPhones Shipping Out From China

News of Apple’s coming event is starting to hit, as German site Macerkopf has potentially let the cat out of the bag. According to their report, sources with German cell carriers let them know that iPhone preorders will start on Friday, September 14th. This date certainly makes sense, as last year’s iPhone X preorders started on September 15th.

Pics from St Augustine- Heading Home

It’s time to hit the road home. In fact, I’m typing this up in the passenger seat of our rented minivan as we begin the 13 hour trek back to North Mississippi. It’s been a good trip and a fun vacation despite rain on and off throughout our stay. Oh, and the fact that the ocean decided to remove my prescription glasses on day three. Thankfully, the local LensCrafters was fast and got me a new pair made yesterday. I wasn’t alone either- there where four others who lost their glasses in the water at that location yesterday. That made me feel a little better.

Pictures from St Augustine- Day Three

Into every life, a little rain must fall. This is especially true in Florida right now. Day two of our trip was full of rain in the afternoon. We had a nice time taking a trolley tour through the city and learning a lot about its buildings and history. However, while that was a great way to do something and still stay semi-dry, it didn’t make for great picture taking.

While we still had to dodge some raindrops today, we were able to get in a few hours at the beach in nice weather. We then went to a wildlife rescue where I thought I would take a ton of pictures. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow picture taking, but it was still a great tour that got us just a few feet away from some some Tigers, Lions, Wolves, and even one very large Liger.

Greetings and Photos From St Augustine, FL!

It’s vacation time again. My family and I are in St Augustine, FL to spend some time at the beach and see a few sights around America’s oldest city. As I did with the trip my wife and I took to New Orleans for our anniversary last year, I am going to take this opportunity to post some pictures from my iPhone X.

Last year I tested out a couple of camera lens kits from Ztylus for the iPhone 7 Plus I had at the time. This time, I am looking at three lenses from Sandmarc. Today’s pics from the boat tour and the beach feature their Wide Angle and Fisheye lenses for the X, along with a few pics from the X alone. I will be reviewing these lenses, along with Sandmarc’s Macro lens, after we return home next week.

The iPhone 8 is Still Selling Surprisingly Well

Remember when the iPhone 8 was released last year? The tech press was universally unimpressed, and most of them predicted mediocre to poor sales. To be honest, I didn’t find it particularly compelling, either. No one can deny that the 8 and 8 Plus’ almost four year old design is dated, at best. A glass back, new gold color, and wireless charging didn’t change that.

This perception was just exacerbated by the fact that the iPhone X is so much more visually appealing than the 8 and 8 Plus, with its glass curves and bezel-less design. How in the world would this older looking phone with a new price tag compete with the the X on one side, and the less expensive, but very similar looking iPhone 7 on the other? This doesn’t even factor in the constantly improving Android flagship phones from Samsung, LG, and Google, themselves. I can’t say I thought the iPhone 8 was destined for great sales numbers.
