Gorillaz’ new album that was recorded almost entirely on an iPad is out now. The album is called The Fall, and you can download it for free from the band’s site – if you’re a member of their fanclub. If you’re not a member you can listen to all the album’s tracks streamed at the site.
Here’ a little detail on how the album was produced, straight from the PDF booklet that accompanies the download:
All tracks written and performed by Gorillaz using the iPad and additional instruments: Korg Vocoder, Ukelele, Microkorg, Omnichord, Moog Voyager, Melodica, Guitar, Piano, Korg Monotron. Except track 13 written and performed by Gorillaz and Bobby Womack. Recorded between Montreal and Vancouver over 32 days on the Gorillaz North American Tour 2010
Damon Albarn, frontman for both Gorillaz and The Blur, has talked quite a bit about using the iPad to record this album. Here’s a couple examples, via The Next Web:
According to Albarn:
“The music was recorded during spare time while on the road. I did it because there’s a lot of time that you just spend staring at walls essentially. And it was a fantastic way of doing it. I found working in the day, whether it’s in the hotel or in the venue, it was a brilliant way of keeping myself well.”
“The collection is ..like a diary, I literally wrote everything on the day in each place and there’s a strange sort of sound of America and its musical traditions that comes through. It feels like a journey through America”
I’ve been listening to the album a bit today. It’s pretty good stuff, and doesn’t scream out to me that it was mostly recorded on an iPad. Nice work iPad and Gorillaz. :)
