iPad 2 Accessories: The Smart Cover from Apple

iPad 2 Smart Cover

Apple’s Smart Cover for the iPad 2 was heavily featured in the iPad 2 announcement event this week. It’s a versatile looking cover / case with some clever tricks up its sleeve. Here’s a section of its intro on Apple’s iPad pages:

The slim yet sturdy Smart Cover protects your iPad screen without covering up its durable aluminum back.1 So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection. Even better, the Smart Cover doubles as the perfect movie-watching, game-playing, web-surfing, do-it-all companion. It folds in all the right places so you can quickly create a stand that holds iPad upright. Or one that lets you tilt iPad into a comfortable typing position. If you prefer to hold iPad, the Smart Cover flips back and out of the way like a page in a magazine. And if you want to shoot some HD video on the fly, the Smart Cover folds in half to expose the back-facing camera. Now that’s something to smile about.

Some other notable features of the iPad 2 Smart Cover include:

— It has magnets built into its frame:

For starters, iPad has magnets built right into its frame — magnets that align perfectly with the Smart Cover hinge for an effortless fit. On the opposite side, magnets inside the Smart Cover help it stay put. It’s ingenious yet simple. Secure yet easy to remove.

— It helps manage the sleep / wake state of the iPad 2:

The Smart Cover makes iPad do things no other cover can. Close it, and iPad automatically goes to sleep. Open it, and iPad instantly wakes up — no need to press any buttons.

— It comes in a range of ten colors – 5 in polyurethane and 5 in Italian leather.

— It’s got a microfiber lining to that helps to keep the iPad 2 free of smudges and fingerprints.

It also looks to be easy to manipulate to place your iPad 2 in optimum positions for viewing and typing.

While the Smart Cover looks quite interesting, I have some reservations about it. For starters, I hated Apple’s case for the original iPad – couldn’t get past (or even through) Day 1 with it. I also wonder how the Smart Cover will do with screen protectors; as I will definitely be getting them for my iPad 2 and Apple of late tends not to be a fan of them.

The Smart Cover goes for $39 (for the polyurethane models) and $69 (for leather).

What do you all think of the Smart Cover? Will you be getting one?

  1. I’m wondering a) what I”m going to do with it when I’m reading a book, when I don’t need it propped up. Will it flip around to the back or do I need to take it off & sit it somewhere? b) speaking of the back, I really prefer to have the back covered, which might be the reason I don’t get this case.

    1. It looks easy to position it on the back for use as a stand in several positions, but I don’t think it is intended as / capable of being a back cover type case.

  2. Dude, i generally like your site JUST enough to usually overlook this, but seriously, could you tone down the amount of churnalism? By which i mean the bulk of most articles being made up of “the app store elevator pitch”, or rather, pasting pretty much the entire Press Release. If there’s someone subscribed to this blog that doesn’t know about the Smart Cover, briefly summarise and then link to the product page about it, don’t link to the page AND regurgitate the PR. There’s only 1 paragraph of original opinion on this page!

    1. Your frustration is duly noted. I have to say that nearly every time I use the ‘app store elevator pitch’ it is in addition to my own thoughts on the app in question. I do that because I feel it’s worth sharing at least a portion of an app’s description in the App Store – I’m not going to rewrite that for them.

On this post I shared mostly small chunks of descriptive text on particular features of the cover, along with my own writing referencing those features. At the end of the day, this is ‘just’ a case / cover as far as I’m concerned – there’s not an enormous amount to say (prior to using it) apart from running down those notable features.

  3. I WANT THE HARD CANDY CONVERTIBLE CASE NOW! I bought…and hate … Apple’s “Smart Cover” (anyone wanna buy a gray one cheap?) It doesn’t protect sides, buttons, or back (WTF?) – I have to fold the cover back origami style 10x a day to type notes in meetings and it gets old, FAST. press too hard on the keyboard or an app button and the things drops off the magnets and clatters onto the table. Not digging it.

    1. Yeah, there are definitely some not-so-great thing about the smart cover, but I still find myself liking it quite a bit.
