iPadLock – the First iPad Security Cable Lock

It seems like almost a given that the iPad should be a highly desirable object for casual thieves. It’s light and compact, relatively easy to just grab and go if somebody leaves one unattended, even for just a moment, in a coffee shop or just about any public place. I know I always try to keep a good eye on mine when I take it out and about with me.

The iPadLock – from Maclocks.com – is the first security cable lock for the iPad – and it’s designed to keep any opportunistic thieves. Here’s some detail about how this secure case plus lock combo works to protect your iPad:

The first component of the patent-pending iPad Lock is a hard, clear plastic case you can leave on for everyday protection. And since the iPad has no security slot, the case has one built in. That way you can lock the security cable to the case, and loop the cable’s other end around a fixed object (like a table). Once the case and cable are locked together, thieves can’t detach the case without damaging the iPad.

Likewise, the strong steel cable will discourage any thief. Weighing less than one pound, the cable is extremely sleek and its lock-head has the smallest diameter of any computer lock in the world.

Although I think this may be a useful accessory for some of you who often take your iPad out to crowded public places, here’s the part that worries me a little – this phrase from the product description:

Once the case and cable are locked together, thieves can’t detach the case without damaging the iPad.

That has me thinking that a lot of potential iPad thieves may not work out that their efforts are going to damage the iPad while it’s secured with the iPadLock. Others may realize and just not care, or even decide to give it their worst just out of spite.

For now I think I’ll stick to just doing my best to be vigilant about my iPad when I take it out, which I do fairly often, even if it means popping it in a messenger bag when I go to the rest room, or similarly crazy methods.

The iPadLock goes for $64.95 for the case and cable lock, or for $39.95 without the cable lock. You can get more details and order one via the Maclocks page for them here:

What do you all think of this one? Just what you need to keep your iPad safe?
