The SPIGEN Folio S Case for the new iPad is the second SPIGEN case I’ve used. Last month I did a review of the SPIGEN SGP Sleeve for the new iPad and I was very impressed with it. Now I’ve also spent some time using the Folio S case for the new iPad and the short story is that I’m quite impressed again.
Notes
SPIGEN describes the Folio S like so:
The SPIGEN Folio.S Case is a finely hand-crafted folio style case, made of high-quality genuine leather. Case features very slim yet sturdy protection for the new iPad.
As the name suggests, it’s a folio style case that offers protection for the front, back, and sides of the new iPad. Like nearly all folio cases it doubles as a stand and offers stand angles for viewing and typing.
The case comes in brown or dark brown and is priced at $91.99. My review unit – shown above and throughout this post – is the brown model.
Highlights
– This case is very good looking. The color of the leather is gorgeous and even reminds me a little of burnt orange, the color my hometown team, the Texas Longhorns. The SPIGEN wordmark is embossed on the front and back covers but it’s done nicely and doesn’t detract from the handsome look of the case.
– Although its relatively slim it feels very nice as well, and the quality of the case comes through in its precise stitching and every detail of the case.
– The suede interior looks good too – and though I don’t have a clue why, it seems to pick up far less dirt and dust than other folio cases with similar interiors.
– The new iPad fits perfectly inside the frame and is secured very well with a flap that attaches to the case interior with velcro. All the iPads ports and buttons are easily accessible and there’s a generous cutout for the iPad’s back camera.
– Grooves in the inside of the front cover, again as with many folio stands, are used to provide positions when using the case as a stand. The typing position is a little higher than on some stands but it’s comfortable enough.
Lowlights
– The case does not support the iPad’s automatic sleep/wake feature. If you’re a smart cover user and feel like this has become a must-have feature this might be a dealbreaker for you.
– SPIGEN has further branding text on the inside of the front cover too. I think front, back, and interior branding is a little too much.
Overall
The SPIGEN Folio S Case for the new iPad is a great looking and very nicely made folio case for the new iPad. It offers the typical set of features for a folio style iPad case, minus the automatic sleep/wake support. If you’re someone who doesn’t like the automatic sleep/wake feature this may be just the right case for you.
I would miss the sleep/wake feature too much to use this case every day, but I’ve enjoyed using it more than I thought I would.

Disclosure: SPIGEN SGP provided me with this case as a review unit. For information about our review policies please see our About page.
Thanks for the review.
I particularly appreciate the disclosure statement at the conclusion – it’s something which is so important but commonly omitted from review articles on most other websites.
My pleasure on the review, and I’m glad to hear you appreciate the disclosure statement. I’m a big believer in striving for the highest ethical standards in app and accessory reviews. I also think it’s a shame to see that there are so many sites around that demand money for reviews and coverage – and don’t disclose it when they do this.
Is it just me or is rss feed broken? After the website move my last updated entry is from 2 days ago.
It’s not just you. There does appear to be an issue with the RSS feed just now. We’re looking into it. Thanks for mentioning it.

It looks very elegant, cool.
Gr8 review…the case looks sharp.
I like that this combines the professional portfolio look with the stand functionality.
You’re right, the color is gorgeous!! Love it!
The “light” brown is stunning…..very classy.
Love the way the case looks.
Very helpful!
For me, the sleep wake functionality on this case is not a big deal. I don’t particularly care for it. I just wonder if this case can protect the iPad from a short drop.
Patrick’s review is good but didn’t want to rely solely on this review, hence spent some time conducting my own review of this product. I feel it’s awesome with genuine leather and suede interiors that too hand crafted. We too make a lot of hand crated stone products, so anything handcrafted catches my eye. This also makes the price look attractive.
2-tier standing structure, as shown above by Patrick, is a good customization feature.
The folio styling is more business like.
The Spigen logos are too loud.
Spigen website claims “…designed to work just like the combination of the Apple smart cover…..features embedded magnetics to automatically trigger the Sleep/Awake function…”, which is totally opposite to Patrick’s claim (and many other reviews). Spigen seems to have exaggerated this feature on their website.
I think I will give it ****, deducted one star for the missing function.
I have been looking all over for this shade of leather case for an iPad – I get so bored of all the black leather ones. This product is so much more interesting!
To bad it does not have the sleep/wake function …
The case looks great but I just don’t know if I like that it doesn’t support the sleep/wake feature !
Thank you for this review – this case seems to be a very good choice if you want to have a classy and elegant one with all the needed features.
This is one of the best looking cases on the market.
It looks great and professional. Like the functionability of it with its ability to be propped open for reading without others seeing you looking down at it. Helps get through those agonizing meetings.
Love how the cover oozes quality, does the iPad justice!
Brown is sooooooo the new black!
I love the clean lines of this case. The color helps to define it’s quality. My iPad needs this. Haha.
I want it, it is Cool
Love the leather and the camera hole in the cover – I haven’t seen that in a high end leather case before
Looks great, have grown accustomed to the sleep/wake cover, however, think I could adjust with such a beautiful case
Will consider this. Looks great!
I really enjoyed reading this of an iPad leather casing review. Simple, short and straight forward. Based from the photos above, I am really impressed with the fine details of its stitching. Anyways, thanks for your review towards this. Very promising.
I wanted to say that my wife & daughter both have cases semulair to this type, but their not the quality that this one seems to have per your review. My daughter is already on her second case for the new ipad. The next time she needs one I will suggest this one to her. Thank you for your review.
Impressed by the subtle design and styling.
Appreciate the review…I was about to ask about the “auto sleep/awake” but then found my answer in the review. I have become accustom to this feature; however I’ve noticed that they are glitchy as the cover wears out.
I admire the color and the precise stitching, awesome case!
Thanks for the review.
Nice that someone made a folio case that actually looks like a quality folio.
Looks like a case that not provides great protection, but also provides style.
