NASA App HD – One Giant Leap for iPad NASA Fans

NASA App HD is just what it sounds like.  It’s an iPad app that’s all about NASA and space exploration.  There has been a very impressive NASA app on the iPhone for nearly a year now, and it’s great to see a big, beautiful version for the iPad.

Hit the break for a quick rundown of some of the app’s cool features and lots of screenshots …

Here’s the app’s feature listing from its App Store page:

• Thousands of images from NASA IOTD, APOD and
• On demand NASA Videos from around the agency
• Live Streaming of NASA TV
• Current NASA Mission Information
• Launch Information & Countdown clocks
• Current Visible Passes for the International Space Station (ISS)
• ISS and Earth Orbiting Satellite Tracker
• NASA Twitter Feeds from around the agency
• Facebook® Connect and Integrated Twitter™ client for easy sharing
• Map and links to all of the NASA centers
• Quick links to the NASA topic areas
• Featured content section

— WiFi or 3G network connection required. —

If you’re even mildly interested in NASA and space travel and exploration, then this app has got tons to offer.  It’s got a simple UI that works well, with all of its excellent content just a tap or two away at all times.

The main home screen shows a view of our solar system and important stellar objects (including the International Space Station) …

You can tap on any planet (or on the ISS or Earth’s moon) to go to a page with a close-up image of it …

These pages also provide a copious amount of information on each planet / object, including history, notable dates, and any related NASA missions focused on it …

On the top status bar you have single tap access to:

A popup with news / feature sections from the site

A popover with a ‘Contacts app style’ alphabetical directory of photos …

A schedule of shuttle and rocket launch events …

And a map showing NASA Centers in the US …

There’s also a small NASA logo icon at the top left that you can tap to go straight to the site.

Via the bottom nav bar, you can single tap to go to the following sections:

NASA IOTD – the image of the day …

APOD – the astronomy photo of the day …

NASA TV and Videos …

Tweets – Ha, social networking goodness from astronauts …

And the Featured section.

When I was a kid I found moon landings and NASA launches just as exciting and amazing as all the other kids around me.  We had toy rockets and astronaut action figures to help us indulge our interest.  I think it’s safe to say most of us would have moved mountains to get hold of an app like this one.

NASA App HD should be an app that will amaze and entertain kids and adults alike – and one that should prove difficult to get enough of, since it provides constant updates to its content.

You can find NASA App HD in the App Store now, and it is a free app.
