We’ve never tried the Dr. Seuss books before. In many ways it’s because Dr Seuss is an American product and living in the UK we find some of the language a little different and the accent can be a bit annoying (sorry!)
When your kid is very young and learning so much every day, you have to be careful that what they learn doesn’t confuse them. For example, we would say Zed not Zee for “Z”. What Americans call an Eggplant we call an Aubergine. In America a trunk on a car is what we call a boot in the UK. I could go on. But at the end of the day I tend to stay away from Americanised apps for my daughter.
When Oceanhouse Media contacted me about their latest Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Thinks you can Think!” I figured I’d give it a try with the little one. She loves the books on the iPad. She loves books in whatever format to be honest!
This takes the same approach as many of the other book apps for the iPad where you can choose to have it read to you or read yourself. This is great because she’s not really ready for reading herself yet! On each screen there is a little rhyme and then you are presented with a bunch of question marks. When you press them more of the picture is revealed. You then get the chance to interact with various pictures on the screen. You swipe an arrow to turn the page.
I was amazed to find that she was fascinated by it from the outset. Sometimes it takes her a while of watching me to get into the apps but this one she took to right away. Over the last couple of days, it’s become the first app she goes into when she picks up the iPad. A lot of the prompts are around colours which she loves.
I think we have a fan here and that pretty soon she’ll be taking me to the Appstore (as she loves to do all the time!) and demanding I buy her some of the other books!
Here’s an App Store link for Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!; it’s priced at $3.99.
