Olivia Acts Out is a new iPad eBook featuring the popular Nickelodeon show’s piggy star. Olivia has been a favorite show for my daughter (Zoe) for a long while, so she was happy to take a look at the app with me and help write this review.
Here’s a little bit of the App Store intro for the app:
A brand new story based on the top-ranked TV show character and star of the best-selling Olivia book series will “multi-touch” your heart. With over 30 interactive animations, engaging effects and delightful 3D animation, this new series of eBook can be enjoyed by preschoolers, early readers and the young of every age.
And a few of its key features:
– A brand new Olivia story that’s funny and entertaining
– More than 30 interactive animations
– Fun sound effects
– All pages are professionally narrated
– Simple and intuitive user interface
Zoe and I have been through the eBook a couple times now and we have some quick thoughts on it and a couple more screenshots to share …
Here is Zoe’s quick take:
I think Olivia is a very good story. It has lots of nice animations. I think it could have added another story to make it more fun. The app is really good but maybe it could have some games or puzzles or something to make it better then other e-books. But it’s a really good app.
This is a very nicely executed eBook app. The animations look just as good as on the TV show. The show’s catchy theme tune plays in the background, and the voiceovers for Olivia and the other characters sound very close to those on the TV show as well.
There are not a huge number of interactive elements on the pages, but many of those that are used are funny and fun to tap and see. Just as a few examples, there’s a nice bit of animation where Olivia whispers something in Francine’s ear during their school play; a page where Olivia tap dances, and a page where one of the actors in the play is facing the wrong way and turns around to correct this when you tap on him.
The story definitely has some funny lines and moments too. As Zoe mentioned, it would be nice if the app had some extras to go along with the story – pages to color in, puzzles or other similar items that similarly targeted eBooks often have.
If you’re a fan of the Olivia series on Nickelodeon, or have kiddos who are, you and they are going to enjoy this app.
Here’s an App Store link for Olivia Acts Out; it’s priced at $4.99.
