Savor: Flipboard-Like Shopping Deals App for iPad

Savor iPad app

Savor is a Flipboard like Shopping Deals app for the iPad.

Being a fan of both the Flipboard app and getting a good deal, I was eager to try out the app.

The initial screen of the app shows thumbnails of the “catalogs” available and a search box to search for Stores and Brands.  There are currently 16 catalogs shown.  Under the catalogs are the Featured Offers.

Touch one of the catalogs and you will get a magazine style view with the offers found for that category.

Flip through the “book” and you will see the current offers in that category.

Touch one of the offers and you will be taken to the website via the Safari app.   If the offer has a coupon code, you will first see a window with a button to press to copy the coupon code and another button to go to the website.

If you scroll down past the catalogs on the Home screen, you will see the Featured Offers.  These will be across all categories.

The Search box is used to enter a Store or a Brand.  Start typing and suggestions of brands and stores that are included in the app will appear.

Touch one of these brands or stores and the current offers for that store or brand will appear.

Both the catalog offers and featured offers are shown as boxes with a brief description of the offer such as 20% off children’s jackets, etc.  there is a plus sign that when touched will save the offer if you have created a Savor account and logged in.

The top of the screen has a box to Log in/Sign up to Savor.  This will save your preferences as well as any deal you are interested in. You can sign in through Facebook or through email.  I don’t like to add more things to Facebook so I chose to create an account via email. You need to provide your name, city, state, age and gender.  You select Product Categories and Retailers you are interested in.  You are asked about notification reminders when deals are near expiration, receiving updates about new Savor features and New Deal notifications.  A very nice feature of this app is that OPT OUT is selected by default.  You have to choose to OPT IN.

Once you create an account at Savor.  You can touch the plus sign in any offer to save it.

When you are logged in, the Home screen shows, a featured offer for you, your subscriptions and the number of saved offers.

Touch the Saved Offers button to view them.   You now have a menu at the bottom to look at all the subscriptions and offers available and change your settings.

The login is also meant to link the app with their website.  Your saved offers will show up there when you use your login.

Pros:  There is a pretty good selection of stores for a brand new app.  It is easy to search for specific stores or brands.

Cons:   One of the beauties of the Flipboard app is that when a webpage is opened, there is always a button or arrow to get you back to your place in the Flipboard app. Savor takes you out of the app.  To get back to Savor, you have to open the app again, either by gestures or using the iPad’s Home button. The text on this app is a little difficult for “older eyes” to read.

This app has potential; especially if they can figure out how to keep you in the app when you go to a webpage for more information on the product.  It would also be helpful if the Search feature was expanded to include product types as well as stores and brands.

Here’s an App Store link for Savor; it’s a free app.
