The description page for Sporcle touts it as …
the App Store’s leading trivia application. Sporcle brings the wildly popular and addictive trivia web site Sporcle.com to your iPhone/iPod Touch
The game lives up to and exceeds that description. If you like trivia games at all, you need to check this game out. It is spectacularly good, hugely fun, and highly addictive.
Another slice of the game’s App Store description:
As heard on the Howard Stern Show and chronicled in the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and Times of London …
It’s derived from the sporcle.com web site that has as its tagline ‘Mentally stimulating diversions‘.
I had never heard of the web site or the app until I read Larry Greenberg’s great post about it a few days back.
Variety Is The Spice of Life, and This Is One Super Spicy App
There are plenty of good trivia apps around. The thing that puts Sporcle at a level well above them is the quality and variety of its content. It offers a broad set of categories, covering everything from movies and music to sports, history, geography, literature and lots more.
The real magic of Sporcle is within each of the categories though – it is the superb array of quizzes to be done within each category. These are much more than just run-of-the-mill quizzes. They are perfectly done for trivia buffs and offer a broad array of really compelling topic areas.
Under Music, for instance, you have individual quizzes that test your ability to identify songs by opening lyrics and ask you to fill in the missing word from a song title.
Under Movies, you can try out quizzes on the Top X Box Office hits of various decades, movie plot haikus, identifying movies by taglines, naming Oscar winners, and lots more.
There are also a great number of quizzes that are great fun to do if you have kids or want to get the whole family involved. Everything from animal-related ones to history, geography, holiday-related, and even a Language category with quizzes like: Words That Begin and End in R, Words That End in ‘ICE’, Isms, IUM Words, and Palindromic Words.
The game has you covered for just about any subject area you may be interested in.
Sports, Sports, Sports
If you’re a big sports fan, you’ll love this game even more. The sports quizzes are just all sorts of awesome, covering everything from Wimbledon winners to the nicknames of major NCAA team names. Here’s another example (along with the one at the top of this post) of some of the great quizzes offered in the Sports category:
Here’s one of my favorites I’ve done so far – Baseball’s 500 Home Run Club …
This one was very challenging, but also a favorite topic – who doesn’t love thinking about baseball’s great sluggers? Seeing the 5 guys I missed naming had me kicking myself – how the heck I forgot Mays and Griffey in particular is beyond me.
Some other sports quizzes I’ve enjoyed doing included: trying to name all the members of the US Olympic Basketball Dream Team, trying to name every team in MLB, NBA, the NFL, the NCAA’s major conferences, NFL MVPs, every member of the English Premier League (throughout its history, not just right now), NBA All-time Scoring Leaders, and many more.
I could spend all weekend in just the Sports category. :)
Some Great Game Features
Variety – again. Some quizzes just make you fill in a missing word. Others are just straight-up ‘Name all the … in 5 minutes’ style, with no hints or clues to go by. These are challenging and big fun.
No multiple choice. I love this aspect of it. It forces you to think a lot more.
You can tackle each quiz as many times as you like.
It tracks your results. Whenever you look at a category, the quizzes you’ve already tried are clearly indicated, along with a view of your results on them.
Larry admitted in his post to being addicted to Sporcle. Larry can now consider himself a sponsor for another addict (is that how that works???) – because I’m thoroughly hooked on the game now as well. I spent ages last night playing it while mostly ignoring the TV.
Oh, and I am playing the iPhone version of the app – as there is no iPad version yet. I use it at the scaled-up 2X size. Text is far from crisp, but honestly for a game like this one it doesn’t detract from the fun at all.
I can’t recommend this game enough. It’s great fun solo or with family. I’ve tried out a number of good trivia games, but none that come close to Sporcle. It is THE trivia game.
You can find Sporcle in the App Store now, priced at $0.99. There is also a Lite version of it, which has 25 quizzes to choose from.
Again, the version I used for this review is the iPhone version (1.1.0) as there is no iPad version yet.
