London 2012 iPad App Store Section

The London 2012 Summer Olympics are set to open in just about a week – and this week there’s a special iPad App Store section devoted to London 2012 apps.

The section has a half dozen apps in it – including an official results app and mobile game published by the organizers of the games themselves, a couple of apps from NBC and an app focused on Team USA. It’s a bit of a sparse selection by the App Store them – though there was also a section full of apps about the city of London last week.

I’ve tried out a couple of the apps featured in the London 2012 section, the London 2012: Official Results App and NBC Olympics Live Extra. The official app looks decent enough though not tremendously exciting. It’s clean looking and seems easy to navigate – but it looks like it won’t be offering much of any video of action at the games.

NBC’s app will be offering live video coverage, but only to those users who have cable TV accounts and sign in with them within the app. The app looks disappointing for this reason and others – not least because it’s designed only to run in portrait mode.

Sports Illustrated also has a free iPad issue out called Sports Illustrated Live from London 2012.

I love the summer Olympics and I’m excited to see the London games get underway, but so far I feel decidedly underwhelmed by the selection of iPad apps focused on them. I haven’t seen a single app that looks like the quality of those for The Masters or MLB or even Wimbledon.

Let me know if you’ve seen some better iPad apps for 2012 that are worth looking at.
