This week’s App Store iPad App of the Week is 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic. Here’s its App Store intro:
National Geographic Magazine has searched its vast archives to find its most memorable photographs. This application brings National Geographic’s 50 Greatest Photographs to life with the rich features and functionality of iPad™. Learn the stories behind our most iconic photographs, watch videos from our photographers, buy prints, share photos with your friends, and even connect to Your Shot to enjoy top user-submitted photography.
The 50 Greatest Photographs include riveting images of the Afghan Girl and Titanic and stunning natural and cultural landscapes.
Among the app’s key features is the ability to buy a print – framed or unframed – of any of the included 50 photos.
I think this app is a nice idea, but two things about it strike me as not quite right. Firstly, the $4.99 price tag for an app that contains only 50 photographs, as lovely or great as they may be. The Life app for the iPad is free and offers thousands of images – and they are renowned for their wonderful and stunning photography. Also, the app does not make any mention of even updating or refreshing the contents – so it’s just a static set of 50 images.
