Google’s Chromecast app has arrived on the iPad and iOS this week. Chromecast is Google’s new little device that plugs into your HDTV and lets you stream content to it,currently from a limited number of apps and sources.
It’s not an Apple TV equivalent, but it’s quite a nice alternative, or a nice extra option to have around. The Chromecast device itself is the size of a rather chunky flash drive and slots in easily to an HDMI port on an HDTV. Once Chromecast is plugged into a TV setup is super easy and takes takes just a couple minutes.
You can currently ‘cast’ from the Netflix and YouTube apps on iOS – though not yet from the Chrome browser app, as you can on a desktop.
The new Chromecast ioS app can be used to setup a Chromecast device and to manage Chromecast settings.
I’ve been using a Chromecast (2 in fact) since Day 1 that they were available to buy and I’m quite happy with it. I especially like the fact that it seems to have an absolute minimal effect on battery drain when casting from Android devices,. I hope the same will be true with this new iOS app.
Here’s an App Store link for Chromecast for iPad; it’s a free app.
