Citrix on iPad

Citrix is one of the leading names when it comes to secure remote access within corporate environments. They already have a remote access client app for the iPhone, called Citrix Receiver.

It’s good to see that they are planning to bring a version of Citrix Receiver to the iPad as well:

Well if your company has XenDesktop or XenApp you will be happy to know you will be able to use your iPad for real work as well. It turns out the 9.7 inch display on the iPad with a 1024×768 screen resolution works great for a full VDI XenDesktop. Windows applications run unmodified and securely in the data center, and even multiple applications at once. The advancements that were made for the Citrix Receiver for iPhone will carry over to the iPad, however the iPhone restrictions of screen size and small keyboards are overcome with the iPad. It’s a beautiful thing ! The iPad looks to be an ideal end point device that can empower users to be productive were ever they are and IT will be able to safely deliver company hosted virtual desktops and apps without worry.

My ‘day job’ as an IT consultant and network engineer involves a lot of remote support, and there are a number of decent to quite good remote access apps for the iPhone. Having said that, any well executed remote access app that works on the iPad’s much bigger screen is going to be a joy to use for this purpose.

I imagine we’ll see a wealth of good remote access apps for the iPad – some that are in the App Store already and will create modified versions for the bigger device, and some brand new ones.

It’s good to see a blue-chip name like Citrix showing some iPad support straight away.

  1. That is great news. It means, should my company support the solution, that when I'm traveling I could take only my iPad and not my laptop and still be able to log on to work if absolutely necessary.

  2. In my own view, the iPad's future is especially secure with the use of the device as a business tool, such as with the 2X Client for iOS (…the app is a free download and lets you use Windows apps from your iPad, giving you application publishing and RDP Remote Desktop capabilities for free, in contrast to the Citrix Receiver and Wyse PocketCloud. Definitely worth a look.
