Google Maps iOS App Updated – Still No iPad Version

Google Maps iOS app

The Google Maps app for iPhone has been updated today, to Version 1.1. The update includes a handful of useful new features:

* Search your Google Contacts; sign in to have your saved addresses show up when you search for friends and family by name.
* Quickly search for local places by selecting popular categories such as restaurants, bars, cafes, gas stations, etc.
* Choose between Kilometers or Miles for your preferred distance units.
* Note that some features may not be available in all countries.

As notable as what’s in the update is what’s missing – namely an iPad version, given that this app was released nearly 3 months ago. In the meantime, it continues to look terrible and be far less useful on the iPad.

  1. Although there is no dedicated iPad app, you can hack it to display on an iPad, and it actually looks quite good. The hack is simple:
Navigate to the google folder, and find the info.plist file.
Now, open that file however you can, and find this chunk of text:

Now, simply change the 1 to 2, and put the updated file back where you found it. Now after an iPad reboot (or respring if you’re jailbroken) and the app will display in true iPad glory

    1. Ok so it seems that it stripped part of my comment away because it was code (stupid me, they want to prevent code injection, sorry mods!) anyway, here is a follow up minus some of the < and /

      key UIDeviceFamily /key
      integer 1 /integer

There, hopefully that is more acceptable, yet still understandable to those who try it.
