HBO Releases Streaming App for iPad and iPhone

HBO Go is the new streaming app from HBO for the iPad and iPhone. As you may have guessed, it streams HBO TV shows – over 1,400 of them – to your iDevices. The app is free with an HBO subscription at participating television providers.

Content offered in the app includes HBO original shows, movies, sports, and comedy programming. For hit shows like True Blood, The Sopranos, Entourage, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire every episode is available to be streamed.

The app is touted as HBO Anywhere and can be used on the go as long as you have minimum a 3G connection.

I’ve never been an HBO subscriber, but I’ve definitely enjoyed a lot of the HBO shows when they make their way to basic cable channels – so I imagine this app should be quite popular with HBO subscribers.

Here’s an App Store link for HBO Go; it’s a free app and also a universal app, designed for both iPad and iPhone.

  1. Hi, I downloaded this on my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4 and the same issues happens on both.. I have Apple TV in my house (actually 2 – 1 in the living room 1 in the home office) and it does it on both also.. Anyway when you watch anything in the HBO Go app and click on the airplay and choose your TV it only puts up the sound.. The Video wont show.. I am using Xfininty and everything else works great on the app just not the AirPlay.. If anyone knows about this and has a fix please email me.. thanks

    1. If you have other apps that work for AirPlay video for you, then it’s likely that this app doesn’t support AirPlay video yet. Not all apps do, and hopefully if that’s the case then video support will be added in a future update.

  2. Im really a newbie to all things iPad – mine is on it’s way, but do you mean that if I only got wifi iPad that I can’t use HBO app? Thanks!

    1. No, not at all. It means if you had slower than a 3G connection (like just EDGE on an iPhone) it won’t work. 3G and WiFi connections are fine.
