LogMeIn Ignition is one of the best apps around for remote access and remote control of PCs from your iPad or iOS device. It works in tandem with the long-established free LogMeIn desktop software.
It just got a whole lot better though, after it’s latest update (to Version 2.0.264). This update added a File Manager mode to the app, along with an awesome new capability:
the ability to copy and move files from remote computers to the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch).
As far as I know this is a unique feature – I have certainly not seen any other remote access app that lets you copy files from a remote PC to your iPad. I’ve tried it out over the last week or so, and it works superbly well.
The File Manager mode is easy to work with. You can browse and manage local files that have been moved over from remote PCs, and browse to any of your remote PCs and view their folders and files.
It even allows me to see external drives attached to my MacBook Pro when connected to it, and move and copy files from those drives to my iPad. Very, very cool.
You can also create new folders on a remote PC while in file manager mode.
When you copy a file over to the iPad from a remote PC, you can open it in the file manager within LogMeIn Ignition and then choose to open it with a dedicated app (Numbers for a .csv file for example).
It also lets you open and preview a file from a remote PC within the file manager, before deciding on whether to copy it over to the iPad.
If you have connections setup to more than one remote PC, you can move files around between them via the file manager as well.
As I said above, LogMeIn Ignition was already one of the best remote access apps for the iPad and iOS. This new functionality – the ability to move files directly from remote PCs to the iPad and iOS devices – takes it to a whole new level of usefulness.
This is a great feature for home users of LogMeIn, and an even more powerful one for those who are connecting to work computers on a corporate network.
Here’s an App Store link for LogMeIn Ignition; it’s priced at $29.99 and is a universal app designed to run on both the iPad and the iPhone.
