The Space Shuttle Era iPad app

Here’s a new-ish iPad app that should catch the attention of iPad users who are interested in space exploration: The Space Shuttle Era: Stories from 30 Years of Exploration, from Air & Space Magazine and the Smithsonian Institution.

The app is based on a popular print title – Collector’s Edition Space Shuttle 1981-2011 and celebrates the 30 year history of the Space Shuttle. Of course this iPad app includes new multimedia and interactive elements to enhance the content. Here are some of its notable features:

* Learn from the astronauts themselves what it was like to ride the shuttle into orbit and live and work in space
* Watch a unique time-lapse video of an orbiter being connected to its giant external fuel tank and boosters, moved to the pad, and launched
* See breathtaking photos of shuttle operations in orbit
* Find out how engineers overcame enormous challenges to invent the world’s first reusable space plane
* Read an essay about seeing the Earth from space by first U.S. woman astronaut Sally Ride

I just installed the app last night, but haven’t even had a chance to look at it as yet. I’ll likely post a review of it once I’ve spent some time with it.

Here’s an App Store link for The Space Shuttle Era: Stories from 30 Years of Exploration; it’s priced at $5.99.
