Phraseology for iPad

Phraseology is another new and good-looking writing app for the iPad, just released today in the iPad App Store. It’s on sale today only to mark its launch at just 99 cents – its full price will be $2.99.

Here’s the quick elevator pitch for Phraseology in the App Store:

Phraseology is an iPad app for writers. Part text editor, part word processor, Phraseology is a simple environment focused on making it enjoyable and productive to write on the iPad.

Phraseology is developed by Agile Tortoise – who are also the developers of the excellent Terminology dictionary / thesaurus app, which I reviewed last year. It is also one of my selections in my list of the Best iPad Apps of 2011.

I had an early look at some of the betas of Phraseology before release and installed the app itself this morning. Here are some very early impressions and thoughts on it:

— It offers some unique features that should be very useful for those who do a lot of writing on the iPad. For starters, it has slick integration with the Terminology app – so it’s easy to get suggestions and replacement words without breaking up your workflow.

It also has clever Arrange and Inspect tools available with one tap on its sidebar. Arrange lets you easily move around paragraphs and line breaks to make your text flow. Inspect offers a wealth of information to help you analyze what you’ve written, including Readability Analysis.

— It’s got 9 fonts to choose from – including some well-liked standards like Helvetica Neue, Gill Sans, and Palatino, and it’s very easy to resize the text as well.

— It does not currently have a focus or full-screen mode. I think it would benefit from having that option. There’s also no iCloud or Dropbox support as yet. For me, that’s an essential feature – and I’m glad that the developers have said at least Dropbox sync will be coming in a future update.

Here’s an App Store link for Phraseology; it’s priced at $0.99 just for today, and will move up to $1.99 for one week tomorrow (12/30) and then its full price of $2.99. The app requires iOS 5 or higher.
