The Daily, the first iPad-only newspaper, has had a recent update – to Version 1.2.0.
The big change in this update is support for Newsstand – the new ‘smart folder’ for newspaper and magazine iPad editions. This should provide automatic downloads of new issues in the background on iOS 5. In fact, according to the update details it should do both of these things:
Automatically downloads your daily issue in the background if device is running iOS 5
Faster time to working cover
I say should because my first couple times opening The Daily after it was updated and sitting inside Newsstand, I was still greeted with this screen:
And it still took quite a little while to show the front page – and when it did and I browsed to, say, the Sports section, it took a bit more time to load those pages – and even showed the little pie chart of download status as less than halfway through.
I hope that was some sort of odd glitch on my first couple tries – because otherwise this is a complete fail when it comes to the whole downloaded in the background feature.
I know we have quite a few readers of The Daily here. What have you guys and gals been seeing since the Newsstand update for it? Is it full loaded in the background?

Initially it was not auto-updating for me. I had to turn it on in the Store Settings.
Mine is On in Store settings as well – and has been ever since it appeared there.
Auto update feature saves me a significant amount of time in the mornings. Although I initially see the blue screen it quickly moves to the front page without any further download necessary. I had considered canceling my subscription prior to this update. I’m happy now and will continue to use this periodical.
