The Daily iPad-only newspaper

The Daily – Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-only newspaper – faces a ‘moment of truth’ next week. Since its launch in early February it has been available for free on the iPad – next week the free period will end and users will need to take up one of the subscription options to continue reading it.

I’ve been keeping up with the app – daily – since its release and have shared my views on it in a full review of The Daily earlier this month. In short, I think it’s a great concept and I hope it succeeds, but it has a long way to go to be a good, solid iPad app and a number of major flaws to address.

I’ll be sticking with The Daily because I admire News Corp’s effort and investment in it, and because I’m an iPad app reviewer. How about you guys? Will you be continuing to read The Daily once it goes paid? If so, are you planning on a weekly or yearly subscription to it?

  1. Yes, I am a big fan of The Daily and have read every episode cover to cover since its’ launch. I already started my weekly subscription a few weeks ago. It still needs some improvements, but there’s still nothing else out there that compares to what they are doing.

    1. That’s worth noting – the fact that they’re still the only ones doing this. Branson’s Project magazine never even cam close to living up to its promise of regular updates.

  2. Yes, I already subscribed. It’s become part of my morning coffee/breakfast routine (as I’m sure they were hoping with the trial!). I get current events/hard news the second I start up in the morning via CNN, but I really enjoy the miscellaneous tidbits the Daily brings. I learn something new every day, which is a good thing! And the graphics are very impressive – the before/after Japan slider graphics were superb and quite moving.

  3. I would want to be able to look at previous issues. If you miss a day, you’re unable to read anything but the current issue.

  4. I actually like the content that’s now being put on The Daily. The pop-up for subscribing came up and I decided to go for the yearly subscription. I selected it and it asked me to confirm the purchase. I hit “confirm” and I keep on getting a iTunes error. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and now it just hangs at the screen where it says its receiving a new issue of The Daily. It asks for my iTunes password but after inputting the password I keep on getting the iTunes error.

    I uninstalled and reinstalled it multiple times and still get the same error. =(

    1. Ouch, that’s not good. Any luck with getting help to resolve this from their support team?

    2. I have the exact same problem. Were you able to resolve this? I’ve gone as far as restoring my iPad, but I still get the same error. Very frustrating since the 2 week trial worked without issues. Sucks that once you pay for it, it has problems.

  5. Yes. I just subscribed today for yearly subscription. I now like it very much and use it daily. I still miss more TECH news though but have noticed that it has improved quite a lot. And man, their videos, pics, slides, are top-notch class. I love it. Now it does not crash (maybe once in 6-7 days but very rare).
    The yearly subscription really works out to 10 cents a day. It is worth it.
    Love it.
