The popular language learning app Duolingo, which boasts over 25 million learners, will be updated to version 4.0 on April 24, promising big  and exciting changes. You may recognize this app – it was the Free iPad App of the week on iPad Insight and was Apple’s iPhone App of The Year in 2013.

The first new feature is called “Duolingo Duels.” Using this feature, you can compete against friends or fellow learners, and your results are fully integrated with Game Center. The current version allows you to see your friends’ (you can follow people on the app) progress, and has a leader board for who has the most points in the week. However, this is the first time the app will actually let you compete head to head with another language learner.

The update also brings great news for English learners – it will bring English language learning to speakers of Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi. Duolingo is definitely breaking down the barriers that different languages can very often create. This app (and check out Duolingo.com too) is truly revolutionizing the way people learn languages. It makes it fun to learn, and allows you to do something productive with your iDevice, at least once you’re done navigating a tiny bird through pipes.

Stay tuned for a full review of the app once the update is released, and in the meantime, try downloading Duolingo for free here and start learning a new language!
