One Less iPad Rival – R.I.P. TouchPad

Wow. HP announced yesterday that is killing off the TouchPad and all its webOS devices – or ‘discontinuing operations’ to use their double-plus good terminology. We had already heard that early sales numbers for the TouchPad were terrible, and yesterday HP’s CEO spoke about why they are giving up on their webOS devices (emphasis below is mine):

HP CEO Léo Apotheker said Thursday the transition comes after careful consideration about ""what needs to be fixed, what needs to be shut down, and what needs to be separated," admitting that "the tablet effect is real and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting [HP’s] expectations."

And by tablet effect he clearly means iPad effect, since there is no other tablet that is even close to selling like the iPad is.

It’s sad to see the TouchPad get killed off so soon. I think for a lot of us it seemed like one of the most promising rivals for the iPad. Now we’ll have to wait and see what Amazon will bring to the tablet market.
