Harry McCracken has an excellent ‘Whatever Happened to …’ rundown of no less than 32 iPad rivals of 2010 at his Technologizer site.
Needless to say, none of them are even a blip on the market share charts for tablets – they’re mostly either scrapped entirely, or delayed to 2011 and beyond, or one of those that makes up the ‘Other’ category in tablet sales figures.
2011 was meant to be the year that competition really heated up for the iPad. So far that hasn’t played out at all though. It’s been more like the Year of the Copycats that Steve Jobs predicted when announcing the iPad 2. It really looks like even at the end of 2011 we won’t have seen a single very strong rival for the iPad.
Hopefully we’ll see one in 2012.
