Review: SurfacePad for iPhone 6S Plus

SurfacePad for iPhone

One of the most appealing characteristics of iPhones in general has been their design.  They are crafted with the utmost attention to detail and precision, using materials and design techniques that further solidify their distinction as beautiful industrial art.  For most, all this changes the moment they open their new iPhone box and slap a, protective case on it.  That’s not for me–but to each their own.  It makes perfect sense to want to protect your investment and keep it safe from the accidents that can occur throughout an average day.  Phones fall out of pockets, and they can become scratched and damaged from your keys  and and other items they come into contact with.  In addition, not everyone wants to pay extra for the additional Apple Care+ like my colleague, Thomas thoughtfully chose to do, and many people keep their phones for 2+ years and want to make them last.

For those of us that want a solution that falls somewhere in between, there is The SurfacePad for iPhone from the awesome folks at Twelve South.  The SurfacePad is a great solution for the problem of having to choose between a thick bulky protective case, and nothing at all.  With the SurfacePad you get the convenience and protection of a minimal, traditional folio case without all the bulk.

Design

As I mentioned previously, the SurfacePad adopts a folio design that opens like a book.  There are two slots on the left flap that could easily store a driver’s license and credit card.  The inside is lined with a micro-fiber material that protects your iPhone screen as well as keeps it free from smudges.  The outside of the SurfacePad is covered in a soft napa-leather that is highlighted with beautiful stitching and a subtle Twelve South logo pressed into the leather placed slightly above the bottom stitch line on the front of the case.  It is the antithesis of a slippery aluminum or a hard plastic case that is hard to hold onto. The back of the SurfacePad has a cut-out for the iPhone camera and a double stitch line that runs down the center of the cover–more on that later.

It is both elegant and feather light, providing a minimalistic feel and a thin profile that adds very little bulk to your iPhone, but still wards off the accidental scratching from repetitive daily handling and contact with keys and other items that fit in your pocket.  It feels absolutely perfect in your hand, and although it won’t protect against the more dramatic drops on the sidewalk or street, it is still a more reliable option than going with a naked phone.  You still get to interact with your iPhone, and appreciate how awesome it looks without having to disassemble a bulky and/or multi-piece case.

Installation

Installation of the SurfacePad couldn’t be easier.  simple remove the backing of the adhesive and line up your device with the outside edge of the case.  Press lightly, and you’re all set.  Don’t worry if you don’t et it just right, you can remove and re-apply if needed.  In addition I have removed this case an dee-applied several times already while I review other cases.  Surprisingly, it’s still sticking to the back of my iPhone.  I had my doubts at first because the adhesive wasn’t as strong as other folio type cases I have tried, but it has never come loose, or even started to peel off.

Options

Remember when I mentioned earlier that there was a double stitching line that ran down the center of the back panel?  The reason for this was that you can lay the SurfacePad in landscape mode and band it back on itself so that it can be propped up on its own while you watch videos or read longer articles.  This was a nice unexpected surprise that I find very useful.

SurfacePad for iPhone

The SurfacePad is available in six colors–Camel, Red Pop, Modern White, Jet Black, Lavender and Midnight Blue.  They are all stunning, but the camel finish ended up being my favorite.  Something about the natural leather look in camel was very appealing, and complemented my iPhone the most.  Prices start at $39.99 for the iPhone 6/6s and increase to $49.99 for the 6 Plus/6S Plus.
