The iPhone XS Max as an Object

Like many other iPhone owners, I keep mine in a case pretty much all of the time. My now shipped off iPhone X and my new XS Max are no exceptions. While the look, basic shape and screen are still there in front of you every day, when you don’t handle the phone alone very often, it is easy to forget just how attractive it is and how good it feels as an object.

I was reminded of this today as I packed my iPhone X up to send back to Apple to fulfill my iPhone Upgrade Program. I took it out of the case and slid it around and flipped it over in my hand a bit before I disabled Find My iPhone and reset it. It really is the most gorgeous and beautifully designed gadget I’ve ever owned. Hands down. As good as the iPhone 4 and 4S were, nothing else is even close.

To be honest, the size and weight of the X (and presumably the XS, as well) feel a little more natural in the hand than the larger XS Max. However, the Max is still just as beautiful a piece of engineering. Despite its large size and additional weight, it feels just as sold and well put together as its older brother. For comparison, I took it out of the case when I got home tonight and have been spending some time using it “naked.” It really is a different experience using a newer iPhone without a case that inevitably adds extra thickness and radically changes the feel of the device.

If you usually keep your iPhone in a case, it’s not a bad idea to free it every so often and remind yourself just how nicely the current iPhone design works in the hand. Whether you have an X, an XS, or an XS Max, let it loose from the case when you have a chance in a place where you don’t have to worry about dropping and breaking it. If it’s been a while, it might surprise you how different your iPhone feels naked.
