Yesterday I covered what I feel is the most basic step in the iPhone X purchase process- deciding whether to purchase AppleCare+. For a large number of us, step two will be finding a suitable case. I already mentioned the SaharaCase, which is available from Amazon with Prime shipping, a couple of days ago as a good “starter option” for those who need something to use until they find something more to their liking. Today, I’m going to cover some of the many other options, a few of which will require you to wait a while.
If you are set on getting something better than a SaharaCase or similar, but want something day one, you still have a couple of options. If you act soon, you will still be able to order cases that are available from Amazon using Prime shipping, or from other online outlets that offer reasonable second-day shipping. Your other option is going to be heading to local stores to go through whatever they have in stock. Carrier stores usually have very limited case selections, so I wouldn’t expect too much there. If you live in a larger metro area, your best local bets are likely going to be BestBuy or Walmart locations and Apple Stores.
If you are already heading to an Apple Store for an in-store pickup, then grabbing a case while you are there may make perfect sense. However, you are going to be limited to their first-party options. Their accessories are on the pricier side, but you are guaranteed a perfect fit and a great warranty. The options are the Silicone Case for $39, the Leather Case for $49, or the Leather Folio for $99.
While it is the most expensive option, the Folio is definitely the most intriguing. This is the first flip case I have seen from Apple for the iPhone. It also has interior pockets, so it can function as a wallet. Even more interesting is the fact that Apple quietly added magnetic sleep-wake functionality to the iPhone X, similar to the iPad, so the case’s magnetic closure will turn your iPhone X on or off. This will be the only case available close to the launch of the phone that is guaranteed to work with this feature, so it is definitely worth a look. Unfortunately, it looks like the Leather Folio won’t be available online for 2-3 weeks, and likely won’t be in stores for just as long. If you need something from Apple day one, the other two case options will have to do.
If you are headed to BestBuy, you should find more of a selection. In fact, BestBuy also sells Apple’s leather and silicone cases, so you have the option of picking them up locally (depending on stock) somewhere other than the Apple Store. They will also have a selection on hand that will include cases from Speck, Case-Mate, Urban Armor Gear, Kate Spade, Incase, OtterBox, Mujjo, and Nomad, among others.
If you are looking for something less expensive at BestBuy, their house brand Insignia cases will only set you back $19.99.
However, I can honestly say that I’ve never been impressed with them. I’ve bought two close to launch over the years. One ended up in a drawer quickly, and I returned the other. Still, it’s about the only case you will find locally on launch day under $20.
While I mentioned Walmart as a possible local option, a quick browse of their website shows absolutely no iPhone 8 cases yet for online order or in-store pickup. I have a hard time believing they won’t have any stock soon after launch, but I would definitely try other options first to be safe.
All of the major case manufacturers are going to have their iPhone X wares out within a few weeks, if not by launch day. BestBuy will only have a small selection of them in stock at stores, but you should be able to find many more color and design options via either Amazon or the individual manufacturer’s sites. Some also have some good deals to get you to go their way.
If premium cases and specialty cases are more your thing, there are already plenty of those available for the iPhone X, as well. Expect to pay more, but you will get some extra quality and feel for your hard-earned cash. A good place to take a look at some of these higher-end cases is Cases.com. They bring several of these products together in one place, and have free shipping on orders over $25.
If you are into fine leather, both Vaja and Piel Frama have already announced their iPhone X case lineups. Both have several colors and styles available, and if you’ve never held one, I can assure you there is a difference. I reviewed the Vaja Niko Wallet-Leather Case for the iPhone 7 Plus earlier this year, and it is of the highest quality.
I mean, have you ever seen a case that comes with its own case? In all seriousness, the look and feel really are a big step up from your typical leather case.
Another unique case manufacturer worth mentioning if you want your iPhone X to stand out is Carved. They hand-make wood-backed, all-wood, and seashell-covered cases using many different colors and types of finishes.
They also have several unique and interesting carvings, designs, and inlays available, as well. The above Turtle Inlay is just one example. They can also do custom logos and designs, too.
The REALLY interesting product coming from Carved is their Live Edge Case for the iPhone X. It is not available, or even priced yet. However, the lone picture on their website is enough to sell me.
This is a hand made all-wood case with Carved’s Satellite Finish, which uses colored and filled wood to imitate satellite imagery. Each design is unique, and they are very striking. I reviewed Carved’s Wood Power Bank with the Satellite Finish earlier this year, and I absolutely loved both the look and feel of it. I think I may have to pull the trigger on this one when it’s available.
This is just a sampling of what’s already either announced or already available for the iPhone X. I am working hard to get my hands on some of these cases for reviews, so stay tuned in the coming weeks. Until then, whether you are going strictly inexpensive and utilitarian, or looking for something with a unique look that reflects your style or personality, you have plenty of cases to choose from. Just don’t wait too long to make a decision, or you won’t have one when launch day arrives.
If you have any questions, feedback, or suggestions for other aspects of the iPhone X you would like to see covered in advance, let me know in the Comments section below, on Flipboard, on our Facebook page, or on Twitter @iPadInsightBlog. I would love to hear from you.
