My Crazy Wishlist for Apple’s iPadOS 14

It’s June and WWDC is just a day away. A little later than usual this year and online-only thanks to the pandemic that we are all living through, but still here. The show will go on starting Monday at 9 AM Pacific.

It’s sure to be a lot different than what we are used to. but I’m betting that Apple will still deliver a polished and very professional presentation. They have quite a rep to uphold as the best in the business at this sort of thing. I doubt they will drop the ball, even under the more difficult circumstances.

What Do You Want To See From Apple At WWDC?

I will have a wishlist of my own to post this weekend, but I am curious as we get close to the main event. What do all of you Apple fans out there want to see announced at WWDC this year?

Apple Doubles Down On Removing Basecamp’s Hey Email App

Phil Schiller’s hardline and tone-deaf response is a really bad look just before WWDC

I just wrote about this a couple of days ago, but here we are again. It’s just a few days until we get lots of new goodies at WWDC and this is what we are talking about instead. Come on, Apple. Taking such a hard line on their App Store fee structure and current rules and enforcement is just piling one mistake on top of another one.

Will Apple’s New Noise Cancelling Headphones Be Arriving At WWDC?

Two weeks ago it was looking very much like Apple’s new AirPods Studio over the ear noise cancelling headphones would be arriving soon. I wrote about this at the time and was feeling pretty good about my recent prediction that they would land right before WWDC. I’m not feeling so confident about that call today, as there has been radio silence on this highly anticipated item ever sense.

Apple Should Consider Not Agitating Developers Before Their Conference for Developers

Tim Cook

I won’t take the time to rehash the details of Apple inexplicably throwing the book at Basecamp and their new email app Hey less than a week before WWDC. However, I don’t see how discussing it can be avoided with things shaping up the way they are. I will never understand how tone-deaf this company can be, at times.

There Are Some New Apple Deals As We Get Close To WWDC

With WWDC only a week away, there are a couple of new Apple deals that have come to light. The first is their new no-interest Apple Card payment plans for Macs, iPads and their accessories, HomePods, Apple TV, AirPods Pro, AirPods and other devices. These new plans, which are similar to one unveiled for the iPhone last year, were rumored last week. While the Apple Watch is strangely absent, these plans should prove to be very popular and get more Apple fans interested in the Apple Card.

Let’s Play a Little Game Called “Would You Buy This Apple Device?”

macbook

Two and a half years ago, I wrote an article asking a simple question. If Apple were to create an iPad hybrid in the body of a MacBook, would you buy it? There were patents and speculation at the time that made it reasonable to consider such a question. That, and the iPad Pro was beginning to push the boundaries of what we expect from an Apple tablet.

Things have certainly changed today and such a device doesn’t seem nearly as far away. Over the last two years we have gotten a new iPad Pro design, a new Apple Pencil, iPadOS, USB-C and full touchpad support. We even have a Magic Keyboard with built-in touchpad that can virtually transform an iPad Pro into something very, very close to a laptop. However, I still think the question of an  iPadOS device in the shell of a MacBook is relevant, at least enough to speculate over.

Should Apple Get Into the Search Engine Business by Purchasing Duck Duck Go?

The suggestion was made earlier this week that Apple should buy the privacy-centered search engine Duck Duck Go. It came from Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, who believes that the company can use such a move to keep the pressure on Google to continue to work with them in the future. They could also use the move to break away from Google and try to compete head-to-head with them. However, while Apple and Duck Duck Go have a shared interest in user privacy, I have my doubts that such a marriage is in either company’s best interest.
